Listen pedants, here is the challenge description:
'It's time for another color challenge. This time around, your submission should show or suggest to the viewer the color purple.'
Nowhere does it say that the main subject has to be purple.
Most of my photo is purple.
Enough said!

I get the feeling people are missing the point. This isn't a scavenger hunt for something purple. I assume the purpose of the challenge is to (obvious?) challenge us to give off a purple vibe with photography. At least, this is what I would vote on.

A side note - BobsterLobster: You have some great new photos, including your Profile picture. You captured a lot of different moods and scenes.

Like I said, most of my photo is purple, it's hardly a scavenger hunt.

Thanks a lot! How's it going in the search for a new camera? |

You are more than welcome! I am trying with all my willpower to wait until the next round of camera releases. I want the stabilizing we talked about, but without the skill I might need for yours. I also want a 10x zoom, maybe 6 MP, and perfect pictures, too! LOL

Why wait? The Canon seems pretty good as a point and shoot, and also something you can grow into, it's had some pretty good reviews. The video capability on it is amazing, and 4 MP seems more than enough for most people's needs... it's also quite affordable at the moment (of course, it's always relative). You may be waiting quite a while for a comparable camera with IS. |

I can't remember off the top of my head why I disqualified the Canon. Maybe the zoom? I agree that 4 MP would be fine all things considered. I have also considered the Kodak 6490, but feel that I really need the stabilizer. Any idea why they are relatively rare????

Oh, the Canon is 3MP... a little out of date now by today's standards. That's a shame! I don't know anything about the Kodak... maybe you might be okay with the FZ10? Is there a shop that'll let you try one out? |

I don't mind people not liking it... but when they say they would have given it a 10 if the subject was purple when most of the picture is purple is a bit annoying!
Kylie... the Kodak looks quite interesting, some good metering options and focusing algorithms. The FZ10 is famously not so good at low-light indoor shots, and the Kodak looks way better on that front. However, without IS, the fact that the lens is 3.7 at the far end of the zoom is not good (F2.8 thoughout the zoom range on the FZ10), and I can't imagine the lens quality being anywhere near that of the Leica lens on the FZ10. One of the first things I noticed when I got the FZ10 was the amazing sharpness of the lens, and lack of chromatic aberrations. The Kodak doesn't appear to have a hot shoe... and I'm really looking forward to getting a good external flash for my FZ10 soon. I've seen some really great results with a FZ10 paired with external flash.
Tricky decision!

FZ10 - I'll look that up. The only stores that carry the higher-end digitals is Circuit City and Fry's. You can touch and hold them, but not really try it out. I do my research on the web and read what people post here for my information. Thank you for all your help!!

It is hard too when reading reviews. A GREAT 3MP still doesn't give the same output as a SO-SO 6 MP for instance. The low light weakness is important to me, but I wonder how bad it is compared to what I have had to work with up to now.
EDIT: I think the FZ10 is the one you told me might be hard for me to meter light with, etc. ??

Yep, the FZ10 is hard to meter with, but I think it's worth persevering with.
The Kodak does take an external flash, but there's no manual white balance or focus, which would make me instantly exclude it from any list I would make.
I am a huge fan of image stablising, which does really narrow down the options... I don't think anything new is on the horizon. If you have the money, the Minolta A1 and A2 seem pretty good... but they're quite expensive, and the zoom doesn't have as much reach. The Minoltas are great in low light though apparently.
Another thing I love about my FZ10 that none of the other cameras have is it's looks. I know it's shallow, but it does help that the FZ10 looks really fancy (especially with the supplied lens hood on) when I want non-photographers to take me seriously as a photographer. |

Sorry, I should add that the general consensus is that an excellent 3MP camera is a MUCH better option than a so-so 6MP camera. I know this is controversial, but with a good 3MP you should be able to get good 10*8. It's rare for most people to need much more than this! |

Yes; understood. I also agree it will be nice to have a non-tourist-looking camera someday! Do you have any idea why the stabilizing ones are not being devloped as fast?

No idea! There's not many companies that do it though, just Panasonic (no point waiting for them... I spent 6 months waiting for the FZ10 to be released in the UK as it was), Canon (only just released a new model... would be pointless to release another one so soon) and Minolta. Maybe Minolta might release a budget superzoom with IS, but there's no reason to believe this. I seriously think that the FZ10 is an amazing camera for the price, despite it's failings, so I'm just happy that it's there, otherwise I'd have forked out for a Rebel. |
