I am assumed they could but then most rubber ducks have red beaks

I wouldn't be inclined to do that if i wanted to go for a ribbon... I'd be sure each element was separate and easily-distinguishable. If I was just having fun, I might do a red ducky with a light inside him and kill 3 elements right there :-)

I'm assuming one of the light sources can be natural light, correct?

So the the light sources have to actually be visible, or implied by shadows/lit areas?

and what about reflected light?

They don't HAVE to be anything. It's arguable the voters may respond better to easily-identifiable sources of light, so they can count them. Just make your best, good-faith attempt to MacGyver up light coming from 3 directions and that'll be fine :-)

As far as I'M concerned, using a reflector to create a strong fill illumination qualifies as a "light source"; and if you don't think that's true, pity anybody who shoots by moonlight :-)

Would I open another box of worms if I ask whether a tomato is a vegetable?

Tomatoes are actually a fruit, but are considered by many to be a vegetable. (and actually the phrase is 'can of worms', but 'box of worms' also has a certain ring to it :-0

Well let's see, you have ambient light like sunlight if shooting outdoors, and incandescent and fluourescent bulbs are found mostly indoors. There are also LEDs. And don't forget your camera's built-in flash, unless it doesn't work. Eh wala! Now get cracking! ;-)

Why not? It doesn't say artificial light source, just three light sources.

Would you guys and girls classify a cucumber as a vegetable?

Fruit
Cucumbers are scientifically classified as fruits. Having an enclosed seed and developing from a flower, botanically speaking, cucumbers are classified as fruits, however, they tend to be seen as vegetables, being prepared and eaten as such.

Oh, nuts, is this challenge going to provide ammunition for the fruit vs vegetable debate? For a photography challenge, that would be taking the splitting of hairs to a whole new level.

The US Supreme Court officially declared the tomato to be a vegetable, though that had more to do with import tarrifs than botany.

Other fruits usually considered "vegetables" include:
-Bell peppers
-Chili peppers
-Eggplant
-Squashes (Winter and Summer varieties, including pumpkins)
-Green beans
-Sugar peas (Chinese pea pods)
-Okra
-Plantains (cooking bananas)
-Tomatillo (husk tomato)

Probably a bunch more I can't think of right now.

And, by contrast, rhubarb is among the few vegetables usually prepared as a fruit (pies, etc.) ...

ROFL! I don't doubt for a minute that people would do it. The dnmc's seem to be flying fast and furious in every challenge for one reason or a million others any more. As for me, I don't put cucumbers in my fruit salad!

Peeled, seeded and cubed they'd be a lot like pears in a fruit salad; use something like sweetened orange juice as a dressing and let it infuse for a while. A typical middle-eastern salad might have cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers -- all fruits -- along with onions and mint ...
