I registered some time ago, and then chickened out of posting anything. I guess I thought the standard was too high for the likes of little old me. But, a few more years under my belt and a lot more experience, and I think I MAY be ready to join the fray.
I mainly want to get some constructive feedback on my images and learn, learn learn.
I did receive the good news this week that I have been accepted as an Alamy contributor, so I can't be all that bad.
I have been a little disheartened with my output lately, but I am hoping to get another new lens soon, if I can sell my existing collection. I really need to improve as I hope to start up my own photography business having been unemployed for a year following redundancy. I have been on several workshops and have been reading lots of books to increase my knowledge. Now I just need to get out there and do it.
I've been taking photographs for years, starting back in the day with 35mm film, but it's quite different when you are only shooting for your own enjoyment as opposed to trying to sell images.
Hope I can soon get up to speed and I look forward to participating. |

Hi Diane, good to see someone else from Yorkshire! Where abouts? I guess from your use name that you are into bird photography - looking forward to seeing some of your photos. |

This is definitely the place to learn. Entering the challenges will force you into uncomfortable territory, which is a must for improvement. It also stimulates me to get out and shoot. Welcome, and don't get discouraged, if your scores seem low. We all get those. :) |

I have learned more at DPC than anywhere else. Not just about what makes an image good, but also about shooting in general, techie stuff, etc. Enter a lot of side challenges. A great way to experiment without worrying about scores.
And welcome! |

Don't worry about skill level. I've been here over 8 years, and they haven't run me off yet.
Though come to think of it, they make doctors faster than I've learned to take pictures.
Still, no worries. Jump in, the water is fine. And if you get a rude comment on one of your images, they just don't get you. Seriously, check my profile. Talent is NOT a requirement. Though it would be nice to have. |

Eight years to make your first post, that has to be some sort of record! Do you work for the government? ;-) |

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
SaraR: I'm near Barnsley. I did originally take up digital photography to take images of birds, but the digiscoping technique failed due to the subject moving too much so I moved to the DSLR and landscapes! But I still go birdwatching - and I occasionally get a photo of a bird if it sits still long enough.
Strikeslip: I don't work for anyone at the moment, hence the attempt to start a photography business. I suppose I just joined and then thought I was out of my depth. I had only just bought my first digital camera then, and that was a compact!
I think I have a tough enough skin not to let a few negative comments bother me, so I hope to be jumping in soon.
One question: am I correct in thinking that I can't set up a gallery without being a full member? A message at the top of the page seemed to indicate that, even though the 'upload' icon seemed to be clickable.

Correct -- a DPC Portfolio is one of the benefits of paid membership. You can try out membership for a month for $5 if you want to see whether that, and the extra challenges, are worth it to you before signing up for a year. |
