I have a small space where I am displaying my work, it is a modern general store in a small town. I have sold a few items but been a bit slow but several people have been asking about portraits. I have setup a poster showing examples of my portraits
I talked to the owner when I went to put that in my space and he has given me the go ahead to setup a small studio in my space one Saturday a month. It won't take too much to take down the table and easels and setup my strobes and a backdrop so I am planning that for the end of this month. Here is the flyer I made for it
So my question is how does the flyer look? Should I add anything to it? What about the pricing, should I maybe lower it to $25 and $40? This is a small town and I am just going to do one pose and that is all. I am planning about 10 minutes per sitting. Since the space is kinda small I will only be doing 1-2 people and only 3/4 and above shots but mostly just head and shoulders. I am mainly hoping this will get my name out there more and it will get me some full sessions this Spring/Summer.

For me, the bright background of the poster makes it a bit hard to read. If it is for people passing by, you want it to communicate quickly and easily. As for pricing, it would be high here, but I live in a rural Missouri town where incomes are lower by far, than the national average.

| I think the bright background is fine (gives it a valentine's day feel), but I'd go with black writing for readability. Those prices would be realistic here. But I've heard Va. has a much lower wage average. Only you would really know what your area would consider a "deal" worth not missing. |

| Thanks. I think I will change the font color to black just for ease of reading and considering the area I have my stuff I will drop the prices to $20 and $35. That will still net me $12 and $24. Not much of a money maker but the main thing is to advertise. I would rather have 4 people see my work and have it in their home for $80 then 2 people for $70 and I can always adjust after this initial run. |

| I say black too, and would also drop the info a little more down the page, so there is a def space between the header and the rest, it kinda all looks a little crammed in there |

My thought, keep the color the same, maybe add saturation, that will tie in the valentines theme. Add other reasons this might be a good reason to participate, senior time is coming soon. I think a 2 week trial run at your original pricing is a good idea, sell yourself cheep now, you will have to later. If you need to adjust your prices later offer less product the same amount, to keep from pissing off the customers that paid a higher price.
Edit, the black lettering works.

I understand what you are saying with the pricing. But. I have my regular pricing on my website and I will likely only be doing this 2-3 times at most (at least at the store) one Spring comes I will be doing my sessions outside at different locations so this is mainly for advertising purposes. Plus I will only be doing one pose and no more then 10 minutes per sitting, if I don't need to move the lights in between it will be more like 5 minutes. So I suppose you could say this is more like a special to get people to know who I am and in turn I hope to get a few full sessions out of it. Bedford is a very small town and even my art prints (8x10 matted to 11x14) at $30 are slow to move. |

Not sure if it was just me but the first time I saw the pricing it kind of confused me on first glance. (I did do an example but it wont allow the blank spaces here )

Are you talking about on my website? Hmm... I may have to look into that a bit more as I had recently updated that page and have not checked it on IE. Seems ok on firefox and safari though. |

No sorry I was talking about the poster, the first time I saw the pricing it confused me a little but now I look back on it, it isn't bad at all. |

hope this works out for you...
a friend of mine over in buchanan did 3 friday night sessions for christmas portraits and, even with his extremely reasonable and affordable prices, ended up with a total of 12 people getting photographed and 5 buying.
it might be that all you can get out of this is exposure.
one thing to keep in mind with and other marketing is that there is a huge difference between a great bargain and a great value. for example, cutting the price of a 4x6 from $10 to $5 is a bargain. one the other hand, charging $10 for a 4x6, but delivering two adds value, especially if it wasn't offered. the price cut endears you to bargain hunters. the over delivery endears you to customers who are willing to pay you what you're worth.
good luck! |

| Thank you Skip. Great analogy on bargain vs. value, hadn't looked at it that way. I am not real optimistic about sales but I do think it will get me experience and hopefully some exposure. |
