so after about a decade of wishing i had a small water craft to fish and photo from - we went out in the pouring rain yesterday for lack of better things to do, and picked up a pair of kayaks... 38 lbs each, 9.5' long, and comfortable. i am quite excited, and headed out on the maiden journey shortly ;}

i have a decent plan to keep it dry.
i bought a small cooler which floats, and i put the camera in a ziplock bag inside the cooler. so if something does happen hopefully the camera wont end up at the bottom of the lake.
the places i will frequent are fairly sheltered, and calm.
we were after a canoe - but the weight, and cost of these changed my mind - i can lift it over my head with one hand !

I have the same setup, but I use an Emotion sit-on-top kayak. It takes the intercoastal chop better than any sit-in kayak I've been in. I also have a cooler for my camera. I'm yet to take the camera out, but I'm only interested in getting the impossible shots with it. I'm gonna take my time. |

We have a couple kayaks also. My husband uses a whitewater boat for doing tricks but I like my nice wide, won't easily tip Otter by Old Town Canoe. I'm not a fan of canoes at all - so I think you made a wise choice.
Congrats on your purchase and I can't to see the shots you get. I'm not brave enough to bring my camera yet...

have you kayak owners had any trouble with sun damage on the polyethylene? that was my biggest concern with the product we choose.
i don't really plan on tackling any surf with these - more for sheltered lakes. mainly
indian brook reservoir ( about 5 minutes away), and colchester pond ( about 10 minutes away ) both nature preserves with no motor vehicles allowed. we may ( once jess gets the hang of paddling ) hit lake champlain on a calm day. and i'll bring them to my parents place in CT - to hit the connecticut river - north of old saybrook. and the salmon river ( another nature preserve ) just south of their house.
if i remembered to charge the damn battery last night i would already be paddling...

All the hard plastic kayaks I've seen had notices like "though this product is designed to be UV-resistant, it should not be stored in direct sunlight." I've owned other kayaks and they started to fade after 2-3 years of seasonal use.

so i went out and tried the kayak out - quite an easy thing to maneuver.
had fishing gear, rope, and my camera with me. but not too crowded.
didn't take too many pictures because there wasn't a whole lot of wild life around at lunch time...
if we get 3 years out of these i would be happy.

it didn't seem to care much that i was right in it's face. i got a kick how the legs were tucked away. i wanted to scare it, and see if it did a roll over into the water.
