Well.... Things could not have gone worse for the fireworks. There were 150,000 people in Charlotte NC for the 4th of July celebration and the city was packed. We decided earlier in the day that we would go and sit in a parking lot and watch from there, also the photos would look nicer with a city scene in them. Fireworks schedule was for 9:45pm. We arrived in Charlotte around 9 and drove for 30 minutes trying to find 1 parking space... It was madness... Everyone and their grandma had the same idea we had. So we ended up in a parking lot I didnt like, with a view of the city I didnt like. So as the fireworks start (around 10:30pm) they shot them from the GROUND!! Not from the tops of one of the buildings!!! So even the best of the fireworks were not as high as the tallest buildings. This made for horrible photos, plus me being so far away, even with a telephoto lens it was too far. Well this was my first time and I will practice again on New Years and hopefully all this will be a learning experience. Here are the best of the worst LOL

Those weren't too bad! I also made my first attempt this year, and I want too happy with mine either. Out of about 100 shots I probably got 2 or 3 decent ones? I just bracketed...bracketed....bracketed! I didnt know what settings to use? |

Dana,
Donât feel bad about those fireworks shots. Considering the circumstances, I would say you did quite well. I know you were working without a cable release and you can see some camera jitter that probably resulted from that but the exposures were good and I think the buildings add an interesting element to the shots.
Also, consider that you got advice from us (the DPC gang) ranging from âhowl at the moonâ to âstand on your head and whistle.â I still think that shooting fireworks is a very unique thing and requires a great deal of experimentation and LUCK.
I was fortunate to be able to capture a perfect view of the Seattle Lake Union display last night. My son is a director for the NBC Seattle station and has, for three years, directed the televised event. He gets mom and dad passes to the best viewing area for the fireworks. It doesnât hurt that this âviewing areaâ includes dinner and unlimited wine and beer. After all, we didnât raise that kid for nothing.
Here are a couple from last night including a shot of the Space Needle before the show started.
