When toggling the 'preview' box in Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom and sometimes Photoshop (CS5) the wait time is about 5-10 seconds when editing 6.3mp RAW files.
(Some load times are slower than that, like zooming in Lr.)
The changes don't "cache" either, as in, it doesn't take 5-10 seconds the first time, then it works. It's thoroughly slow.
Is this normal? I don't consider my computer slow: P4 2.8ghz, 3gb ram, 512mb graphics card, but I could be wrong? I'm on Vista HP SP2.
If it's normal, I'll keep dealing with it. I just want to know if there is a tweak or setting I can optimize.
Also, I'm on the old IDE drives, would SATA make things better? After all, what is the most likely culprit?
(I hope enough people throw in a tip or two that would help everyone, including the ones on old hardware.)
OpenGL is available and enabled. |

That seems *very* slow. Your hardware isn't that old, and your image is not that large. Sounds like something is eating up CPU cycles, or a lot of data is being moved to and from disk.
First thing to check is, while you are waiting for it to render, is the hard drive light on continuously? If so, you are paging to disk and that is the issue. Updating the hard drive may give some benefit, but not a major change. You need to reduce memory usage so it doesn't have to page.
Second thing to check is what process or processes are eating memory and CPU cycles. Do this through Task Manager (press CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose Task Manager). Once Task Manager is running ,make sure it is set to be "always on top" and then run a test. Watch the CPU and memory usage before, during and after the test.

I closed all programs including some memory hogs like Firefox and tried again, no go.
I changed the scratch disks around to all configurations, (editing files on same/different disks, internal/usb drives), no go.
I opened Task Manager and Reliability and Performance Monitor and watched during the time ACR was refreshing, the CPU maxes at around 60% and there are 0 disk writes, the memory usage stays the same, between 160k and 280k or so.
If you add the time it takes to search for help and fix it versus time lost toggling settings during preview I end up asking myself, when is it worth just dealing with it? (Answer: soon.) |

| Well, it sure looks like you've covered the bases, and there doesn't appear to be anything unusual going on. Perhaps it really is normal. Well, time to consider an upgrade... and it looks like you already are! |
