Are Christmas carols also considered as Christmas songs?

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a difference?

Well that's my question too in a nutshell isn't it?

I cannot really see a difference myself. I thought that Christmas Carols contained more religious content such as references to angels and holiness ect but I notice that some Christmas songs do also.

My guess is that whether a Christmas song/carol is religiously inspired or not, it is still a Christmas song since they're all performed by means of singing.

Found the differences: The biggest difference would seem to be the one described in the first link.

We are entering into Advent and I love all of the activities of the season, but nothing is more exciting than all the Christmas music. Do you know the difference between a Christmas carol and a Christmas song? A Christmas carol always tells the story of the Nativity. A Christmas song can sing about any event of Christmas.

"Many people probably also think about modern songs like ”White Christmas”, when they think of Christmas carols. However, there is actually a difference between a “Christmas carol” and a “Christmas song”. Christmas carols can often be sung by a choir and usually have simple and straightforward rhythms. This is rarely the case for pop and rock songs, which often have more complex compositions."

" There is a distinction between a Christmas carol and a Christmas song. A Christmas Carol has a fairly rapid, regular beat, which would, therefore, exclude a meandering, crooning song such as “White Christmas”."

But I guess that for this challenge both would be considered legit though as a Christmas song can be about any event that has to do with Christmas thus including Christmas carols. :)

I always assumed that christmas carols were religious songs and Christmas songs were all inclusive: including both songs like Silent Night and Frosty the Snowman.

I suggested this challenge. If you sing it, it's a song. Of course carols are songs!

Just pulled my entry from this one and entered to layers instead. They both suck, but I think layers will suck less.

I'm glad that everyone is pulling their entries. If I can get 54 more people to pull theirs, I might stand a chance at top 10. :D
