But, I think much of the conversation is on the ethics of such a thing and I agree with VitaminB's point that here we have an example of the opposite and yet they are being praised.
One difference though is Rainer was portraying them as reproductions, not novel creations and that's probably a big difference in my mind. |

The making of copies of existing art has always been a learning exercise, although forgeries have always been valuable in themselves. Brilliant ideas live elsewhere. |

Yes, a key difference. Those photos are an homage. Also, it is an immense technical challenge to duplicate a work of art as a photograph, whereas painting from a photograph is technically much easier than painting without one.

I don't think the difficulty plays into either the ethics or the legality of the situation. At least in my mind it doesn't. |

Actually, I don't think aesthetics can be entirely untangled from ethics, and vice versa, and difficulty can be part of the aesthetic for conceptual art.
But that's a whole other discussion. Actually, it's two whole other discussions. |
