I don't vote them down, but I don't score them astronomically high either. I definitely meet your criteria otherwise. Can't do it myself, my profile shows no useable "eye candy". I complain because I cannot do. |
I hope you're not thinking I'm saying your photography or anyone else's is sub-par because of its subject matter. I am definitely not saying that.
We all have our specialties and I think we should agree that all of them deserve our appreciation and should not consistently be seen as negative when we see them in challenges. That's all I want here, fairness. Stating that water drops are boring consistently in a forum handicaps those who like setting up shots in studios and are good at it. It isn't fair to them.
Why not lobby Langdon for him to create another type of challenge that specifies more artistic, as defined by a chosen group, techniques instead of repeating the same old anti-drop jargon over and over? Not saying you're repeating it but it does get repeated by many others and that's boring as heck to see. I wonder what a newb thinks when reading those? I think there's room for a new different challenge type here at DPC on a weekly basis. Even if the other challenges experience a drop in participation it'll be fun to see and vote on. Langdon could at least try it for a month or so.

No, I do believe that in some ways my photography is indeed sub-par. If I were truly a good technically sound photographer, I should be able to shoot water drops and wine glasses well; I should be able to shoot landscapes and seascapes for score (I live next to the Pacific for Pete's sake...). I cannot. I don't think we need junior varsity or special separate challenges for those of us who can't compete at the top levels technically. We (those of us who can't do) either learn to DO, or continue to enjoy our own paths. And yeah, we shouldn't slam water drops all the time. You do realize they continue to score just fine when they're well done, yes? And people still enjoy doing them. And we had the Posthumous Ribbon challenge - that was different. For some, it was very enjoyable, but I'm sure there were quite a few who found it uncomfortable at best and would rather we not do it again any time soon. |

It's quite funny, the fact that so many people profess to dislike water drops and wine glasses, yet they keep popping up again and again in the ribbons in challenges in which they are entered.
Just sayin'...

Want a brown? Enter a bad waterdrop in a wineglass ;)
Although I too have noticed this, there is indeed an influential and vocal minority who are sickened by the very sight of pretty things, they have been yelling about it so long we all believe that we hate the subject matter - when in reality, a majority of us do admire the beauty no matter how many times it's been done before..

I certainly don't mind seeing waterdrops, wine glasses, hummingbirds, etc done by people who haven't tried them before, but when the same person does the same things over and over again, I just ask "What is the point?". Of course during the voting process I have no idea whom each entry belongs to, so I try to stay fair by giving people the benefit of the doubt that it is something new they have tried for that specific challenge. |

I gotta wonder how many of the total voters out there are participating in this thread . . . I know that all participants here are voters, but I highly doubt that the reciprocal is true. Trying to guess the motives of the very silent majority are making us crazy.

i honestly think we should just have a "waterdrops" and "wine glasses" exclusive challenge week and just get it out of everyones system, haha, and it would certainly prove who can actually pull it off. i personally wouldnt mind seeing people having to stretch to make these shots more creative than the standard version. |

Lol, this could be lots of fun - I'd absolutely grab a cheap bottle of something red and capture it doing something spectacular! |
