The following originally appeared in Popular Photography in April, 1955 (I ran across it while rummaging around a collectibles shop this afternoon).

The tips will increase your winning chances

1. Read rules carefully; follow them to the letter.

2. Edit your pictures; send only the very best. [note: edit means "select", not "process"]

3. Don't strain to be different. Simplicity pays.

4. Everyday subject matter stands best chance.

5. Make sure picture theme is clear on sight.

6. Make best prints of which you are capable.

7. Don't imitate prize winners you have seen.

8. Make prints as large as rules allow.

9. Avoid heavily textured paper surfaces.

10. Be sure to identify each print or transparency.

11. Pack pictures carefully to prevent damage.

12. Fill out entry blank fully and completely.

Seems to me it's only numbers 9 and 11 which don't apply right here at DPC, if you consider the post-processed JPEG to be the equivalent of a print ... maybe not that much has changed at all ...

Number 7 definitely doesn't apply here.

11 definitely applies if you consider that you must save your original, convert it for the web, save to a certain size, deliver it by a cetain time and date, etc...
