Ok gang...here is your chance to prove that the users of dpchallenge are more knowledgable than google....
I have a need for and IP webcam (does not need a computer to run). I can access from web browser anywhere in the world....all that is working.
It also has motion detect....when motion is detected it will record to a drive connected to the cam. The camera also said it could email me photos when motion is detected.
The problem is that the camera CANT do SSL SMTP outgoing mail....only non-SSL...which the maker - TrendNet did not disclose !
Does anyone know of any email service that does not need SSL to send mail? I tried Cox, gmail and yahoo already.
Thanks gang.... |

Is setting up your own mail server an option?

I don't think so, here is what I have to work with:
SMTP Server Address:
Port Number:
Sender Email Address:
Authentication Mode: None SMTP
Sender User Name:
Sender Password:
Receiver #1 Email Address:
Receiver #2 Email Address:
ON THE NETWORK TAB I have:
IP Settings:
DHCP
Static IP
IP: . . .
Subnet Mask: . . .
Default Gateway: . . .
Primary DNS: . . .
Secondary DNS: . . .
PPPoE
User Name:
Password:
DDNS Setting:
Enable
Provider:
Host Name:
User Name:
Password:
UPnP:
Enable
Like I said...everything works fine except for the email thing...

Free SMTP Server
Or, you could try forwarding the email. Send the mail to one address and have that client forward to the final destination.
Just a thought.

Thanks for the link...I'll check it out....as for forwarding...the camera is it's own server. I will not have a computer running in the building that the camera is in. I'll have internet access for the cam. I can access the cam any time but need it to send me photos when movement occurs.
I finally got the FTP server running so at least now it will send a photo of movement to an ftp server. If camera is damaged or whatever...at least I'll have off site photos!
I'll let you know what the link turns up.
EDIT: the link references a windows based server....ooops...can use b/c no computer on site !
Thanks
KS

I'm not sure that I understand the problem. SMTP should work fine without SSL. Whose network is your webcam connected to? Is it your ISP's SMTP server that's requiring SSL? Did you configure your webcam with the correct SMTP server, port number, user name, and password?

My ISP requires an SSL connection as well. Pretty common these days, and good security practice. I am confused though, if the camera is its own server, it should be able to send a message... I'm guessing that the camera does not provide SMTP server functionality, but needs an SMTP server to connect to in order to send, just like your home computer does. That being the case, forwarding is not going to work either, because no message can be sent to begin with. You are stuck with trying to find an e-mail service that does not require an SSL log-on. The camera manufacturer is behind the times, and needs to upgrade their software to allow SSL. |

Most likely the webcam is a client, rather than a server. Check with your ISP to see if they provide a server/port that does not require SSL.
