OK, I finally have my top 5 shots in the "5's" and a few of those are on the page for shots taken with my model of camera, so I must have learned something. However I am NOT a serious photographer, it's just something I like to do to play and relax.
One of the things I like about digital photography is it's a realativly low cost hobby and it's quite harmless and (usually) Legal!
If I actually spend money to become a "member" will it be worth it as a learning tool or will I simply be lumped in with a whole new group of people who are even better than those in the basic challenges, and place even lower with my entries?
If I ever join in a league again, it would be nice to actually HELP whatever team I am on!
C'Mon people, convince a cheapskate to part with a few bucks on a "frivolous" hobby!
Tell me of your experience and how being a "member" helped you more than reading forums and getting feedback in basic entries.

well for your nickle and two pennies a day you get a chance to be addicted to the update button, a portfolio to keep track of your stuff here, the member's challenge where you can dig deeper into photo editing and probably some other stuff.

Only you know how involved you want to get. Participation is more important to me than placement. I have learned heaps since I joined DPC, I know I still have a lot to learn, and even then I'll still have my limitations. I find that it is the side challenges that I enjoy the most, though, and they are hard to play in if you are not a member. Really I think my annual fee is money well spent.

I think the opportunity to play more with advanced editing is worth it. Some people really think that photography should be about minimal editing. However, the stuff I'm doing in advanced editing is still the stuff that photographers did in the dark room. Dodging and burning types of things, (though it's easier doing it different ways in photoshop.) I've learned a lot on how to enhance an already good photograph with advanced editing. (I still can't save bad photographs. :)

Having a porfolio is really nice, because it makes it so much easier to participate in side challenges. Though the side challenges are usually happy bouncy places where everything is good, you can still get constructive criticism when you ask for it. And just playing around with the techniques in the side challenges is quite the learning experience.

I think it's well worth it if you actually use it. :)

With this site, you really kinda get out what you want. Reading lots of stuff in the forums, taking part in side challenges, and entering normal challenges are all directly linked to learning, if you ask me. It's what I've done, and I feel that I've progressed a good deal since joining. The portfolio is nice to have, and facilitates discussion as a whole quite a bit. vawendy noted correctly that side challenges are "happy bouncy places," and further that they are also safe-havens for experimentation. This is very important in my opinion. I also second the usage of "advanced" editing. For me, it's still pretty simple, but my edits are done to specific portions, and that enables me to craft the outcome that I want much more.
As far as how you'll place... you never really know. The Free Studies are indeed much harder and you will probably place lower in those. But I would not say this is so for the Member Challenges. A good number of my highest scoring shots are from Member Challenges.

its relatively low cost if you already own all the equipment.

since i've joined this site i've spent more money on camera equipment than my wife would prefer.
