I'm looking to get a flash for my 7D. I've never owned an external flash and I'm currently looking at the 580EX and the 430EX. I'm leaning towards the 430EX at the moment, but I don't want to invest in something I will grow out of fast. I shoot for fun inside and outside, and will be taking classes on studio shooting etc. At some point I'd like to shoot weddings as well. Can anyone help me out? |

The 580 is "better".... but you know that from the price hey :-) The 430 can be used as a slave off camera in the future, so your not boxing your self in starting with the 430.
Another option... An older 550EX (can be master as well as the 2 versions of the 580)..... I would guess it's in the ballpark price of the 430 but have not really looked.
IF your ok with non Canon brand.... There is a decent Sigma (careful as you need the right version... I THINK it's the super or somesuch) that people like and there are a couple of the newer Chinese ones that claim eTTL compatibility. |

I have the 580EX II , the 430EX and an old 420EX.
I'd say, it depends on what you want to do with it. If you just want a good flash with manual control etc, get the 430EX. If you want to work with multiple flashes, the 580 might be a better choice, however, you can always get the 580 later, after you've gained skills and confidence with the 430. |
