Oh this is a priceless line. If I were to summarize the joy of pinhole photography in to a few brief lines this would need to be included.

I continue to be astonied. I do so believe in this.

You went at the shutter timing in a more concerted and directed fashion than I did, in a related effort. I messed around with doing multiple exposure durations in a single capture for my D300 by starting out with an overall scene (cityscape) and a brighter object (moon). Without getting into all the nitty gritty of the unrelated things, I shot pictures with the moon properly exposed, and then a few shots of it over and under exposed, and noted what the aperture, ISO, and shutter speeds were. Then I took a black card and through trial and error determined (by comparing with earlier made photos) what slit sizes corresponded to which shutter speeds by using a 5 sec exposure and passing the card in front. I always moved the card at the same speed to keep more consistency, altering only the slit size. Once I had my cards prepared, I could alter the shutter speed for different subjects as I wanted, by taping cards together and passing first one slit, then recompose, then the other slit. You could, hypothetically, build your "catalog" as big as you wanted and switch in the correct "shutter" for any situation you wanted, if you had the diligence...

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and kind words.

Derek, your process sounds pretty clever too. I've dabbled with this idea, but haven't gotten as far as you. Do you have any examples?

Totally cool and awesome.

I put my ideas into action over the past couple weeks. Sadly, the first attempt was a failure. During all my clever experimentation below, I must have torn the fragile foil pinhole at some point. But I didn't realize it until I got the first negative back. The pictures were all overexposed and unsharp. (There were a few interesting ones, but nothing worth sharing.) So I rebuilt the pinhole. The new one is in the neighborhood of f/119.

The pinhole candids that I conceived with my relatively large pinhole and fast film and fast shutter and fast fingers -- well, these are going to need some work. But I think there are possibilities.

Otherwise, I did get some decent shots of things in and around the city.

I may post a few more later. But mostly I'm excited about loading the thing up and trying again. Thanks for looking.
