For Anyone who doesn't know there is a KIDS ONLY Side Challenge
So, am asking for anyone with sage advice for our Junior Photographers. We already have 11 kids entered in 3 age groups.
The theme is Holiday Spirit.
Let's start with a few Questions that you can choose to answer or add your own advice.
How do you come up with ideas to meet challenge themes?
What is your favorite to shoot?
Best camera usage advice?
Favorite post processing advice?

To me the two post-processing tools/techniques I consider most important and use most are Curves Adjustments and the Unsharp Mask filter (Photoshop terminology used here).
Curves give maximum control over tone range and contrast, and can be applied to individual color channels as well as overall to adjust/correct/shift colors.
Proper sharpening is essential, especially with little pictures like we post here, and over-sharpening (halos and artifacts) can be worse than having the image too soft. A typical setting for a DPC-sized image might be:
75%/1.0 pixels diameter/Threshold = 5
One trick to help make an image "pop" is to use "high-radius USM" with settings more like these:
15%/50 pixels diameter/Threshold = 0
Apparently having the TH = 0 is important, the other numbers can be experimented-with. Be cautious using this technique on images with clouds or other highlights -- than can be easily blown-out and lose detail.
Note that sharpening, by increasing detail, will make a JPEG file larger for and given level of compression. Sometimes, if an entry is just a few KB over the limit, I will start over and apply less USM rather than decrease the JPEG quality-level setting.
Please note that these (and many other basic and advanced techniques) are addressed in DPC user-written tutorials under the Learn menu ... |

Thanks for the suggestions. What would you suggest to our little ones.
