What a strange country we live in now! Ark Royal is being scrapped, Harriers are being stood down. I watched the first P1127 jump jet at Farnborough Air Show years ago.

But it isn't all doom and gloom, we are getting two new aircraft carriers soonish! One problem, no planes to take off from them?? Am I getting confused as I get older? I thought the whole point of an aircraft carrier wasa to carry aircraft and launch them when needed.

Why scrap Ark Royal? Why dump the Harrier squadron?

We do have a load of F35s on order, but even that has been cut - why they didn't make a carrier based variant of the Typhoon I`ll never know - especially now a more interesting and realistic prospect with one of the new carriers being configured as a CATOBAR (catapult assisted launch, arrestor cable recovery) system.

I admit the Queen Elizabeth class of carriers do look impressive, a wee bit smaller than the US Nimitz class, but huge compared to our current (and soon to be decommissioned) Invincible class - however for pure ship envy I present a shot of HMS Illustrious next to one of the US Supercarriers - our new ones will be a lot closer in size to the Nimitz class than the tiny dinghy seen here.. Does anyone know if the US are working on a NextGen carrier class?
