I want to know if these are "sharp" and if not, is it the lens?
This one is shot at F4 1/40th...
This shot at f4 1/80th...
Hopefully they're big enough for you to analyze.
I heard this lens was sharp, but I'm just not seeing it.

They are a little soft but that does not spoil them. Your speeds are not helping - @ 1/40 and 1/80.
Were these taken on a tripod or hand held and what ISO were you using?

Are those jpgs right out of the camera or have they been converted from RAW. No sharpening applied, correct? |

I would worry about the sharpness AFTER you're sure it's focusing properly. Put the aperture at 1.4 and take a photo of a newspaper or book at an angle. Get as close as you can, and focus on a single line of text (center focus point).
Now, at full size, is that line of text in the sharpest focus? or did the focus miss? If the line of text above or below is sharper than the line you were pointing at, then you have a focus problem. |

They were converted from RAW in lightroom. So there was some sharpening applied.

Handheld. The second was using a bounced flash though.
