So I am LOVING my iMac! But I can't seem to get it to shutdown according to schedule. I go to the energy saver, select schedule, request that the computer shutdown at 11pm every night and it won't do it. It chooses to shut down at random times (when unattended) and start up at random times. And the "lock" icon in the energy saver window, somehow gets unlocked even if I don't unlock it myself.

I don't get it.

This morning at 8am, I was able to wake the computer even though I had shut it down last night and when I woke it, it said that it was getting ready to shut down.

What is happening?

It's probably female; it takes a looong time to get ready ;-)
Seriously, there is probably some task running that is preventing it from shutting down

Check your backup schedule and power management. Do you use third party backup software such as Silverkeeper?

Try resetting your SMU.

You may have a power supply problem. The linked article addresses the symptoms and the causes.

Thanks, Kirbic (I think, hahaha)

Trollman, I am using Time Machine.

Hahn23, I just reset the SMU right after I started this thread. So I have to wait to see what happens today.

Hoping that is the issue.

There is a thread discussion of the problem with installed RAM causing random shutdowns. Not sure the discussion will help, but at least you may find you are not alone. And, another Auto Sleep issues.

And, resetting SMC on Intel based iMac.
