I'd like to learn about different outdoor lighting setups, so i hope to see a challenge like this one day.

Congrats man! I think this should be tons of fun...

i think a lot of people will be shooting for Clouds instead.

Maybe, but this is different, and much more creative, unless you live somewhere with weird cloud formations everyday, im sure im going to go with this one if i get time :-)

Actually I love the idea of outdoor night portraits, and have been thinking of different possibilities all day -- the only reason why I'm choosing the clouds challenge is because it's basic editing, and prefer it over advanced..
Had it been the same, I'd have gone for this.

Clouds is remarkably similar to skyscapes, no?

I hope AlexSaberi enter this one. I'm a big fan of his night shots. Specially this one:

I'll try to have some ideas too.

Well, this SC could help a little, however there was not much interest so far.

Thanks Langdon.

Think about using dual flashes, I think you should do just fine... I don't think night means "stars" and "moon" or "aurora" by the way.. however, this is DPC, it exactly means those LOL

...use your imaginations people, not when you take, but when you vote.

------------------

I just googled "Night portraits" and TONS of perfect ideas just popped... I am sure this will be one of the best challenges

so does a portrait have to include a person or can it be any well defined subject?

It better be a person, or you'll get DNMC'd to death. You might survive with an animal, but it won't score as high as an equivalently well-lit person. Note that the challenge description specifies "someone".

R.

The question that is burning in my mind is how many voters are going to insist that a good night portrait contain lights in the background?

Uhmmm... Aren't we all using backlid in a studio, specially with a dark background. You have to give some silhouette lines and fill lights for a dark environment... If you do have other backlights as in citylights, that's fine too, but I think second light kind of gives better feeling for the night portraits.

...however, one light source would do just fine (dramatic shadow affect) with the surroundings (if you can show them)

Hi everyone. Im new here. The challenge seems very straight forward, but Im sensing that voters and participants dont usually have the same interpretation. Are voters really that strict to the letter of the challenge description? Anyway just to be safe, Id like to take a photo of my model inside an open-air hut by the beach, at night of course. Will i have any problem with the "outdoor" clause of the challenge title? Sorry.. kinda clueless here.

If there is any sign that you are not fully outdoors, you will lose some votes.
If there is any sign that it is not full night, you will lose some votes.
If you fail to use a classic mid chest up headshot portrait, you will lose some votes.
In fact no matter what you do, you will lose some votes.
If you have an idea you like, do it. Please yourself and don't worry about the voters.

I would go with the last suggestion too.
Do what you want, if you like it, submit it and don't worry about the voters. The critics are the most valuable thing in my opinion.

wow... no entries yet.

We don't usually get interesting clouds, so this is the one I'll enter this week. But I can't shoot until Monday or Tuesday.

The challenges with the all-time lowest number of entries are: Vanish & Road Signs. (7 & 9 entries.)

I like that idea -- automatic top ten!

I think, i'm going to enter even though i don't have my off camera flash yet... i wish this would have been next week, im going to NYC and im sure i could have gotten some great outdoor portraits there.

I'm hoping to shoot something for it this evening... just for that automatic top ten....lol

I am trying to enter either this one or the clouds challenge, but both entries depend on mother natures cooperation. So far she hasn't cooperated, so I may not enter either.

i hope everyone who entered this challenge would take time to post their lighting setup details in the photog notes. one thing i've always wanted to learn is how to recreate a slow synch in off-shoe manual settings. 1/160 f8 works well for a studio shot, but not quite for an outdoor setting where i want to capture background ambient lights. i hope of the experts here would enlighten me on this.
