Thanks for the reminder! Also in the Netherlands! So I can wake up at 5:00 AM and still make a photo between 4:00-5:00 AM. |

Oh! Is that now? I always seem to forget! Well, I'm a night person, rarely in bed before half three, so for me it doesn't matter, staying up an extra hour or not. But I really don't like going out alone in the city with my camera at that time of night. |

1st in. That was fun!!! What a beautiful, eerie, peaceful time of the night. Well, I'm a morning person anyway. So, I liked the push of the challenge to get out there. I did not see one car, nor one human between 3:30 and 5:30. My best capture was the last. But, I actuated the shutter at 4:56 AM and it slopped over past 5:00 AM. So, rather than risk a technical DQ for not shooting the entire exposure during the time window, I used a "safer, but less dynamic" image which fell completely inside the time window. Hurrah! Now, I can take an afternoon nap during that harsh midday light. |

What time does the Exif show? That's what I would go by.

The EXIF data shows 4:56 AM on the image I'm not going to use. But, it was a long enough exposure to go past 5:00 AM by the end of the exposure. This MIGHT be legal, but seems to be a technicality which could come around to be interpreted as illegal. I'm not saying it's out-of-bounds. But, no one has said anything about this situation. You know what they say about "assume". I'm not going to assume anything.

I'd say the time recorded in Exif is the time of exposure, especially since that is when the exposure was started. I'd be hard pressed to think SC would DQ it based on that. If that's the strongest image, I'd use it. But, I'm not SC. Just my 2¢

those in Iceland or northern Alaska - is it daylight at 4:00 a.m. now? If so, they may have an advantage. |

Actually, it would be closer to pitch black for them at this time of year. ;o) |

i was thinking of doing an indoor shot myself, but when i looked at the previous 4:00-5:00am challenge, i saw that some people actually did that. And they did not do very well in the scoring, even though some of them were really good images. The ones who truly got up early and captured nice morning shots outdoors were highly rewarded. But who knows, maybe it's different this time. |

It's going to be a rather splendid Saturday for me with an early start, which is really good since me and my better half normally sleep 'til noon on Saturdays.
The plan is to get up three in the morning, get ready and leave the flat about half three. There are night buses where I live, but with several changes to get to where we want to be, whereas the walk is only about 30 mins so that's a bit quicker. If we still are in my timeframe we will have 45-60 mins to get a nice picture (going to try a few different locations in the city).
When we're done I guess it will be five already, and what else is there five in the morning in the city but POLO BREAKFAST BAR?! 24hrs with breakfast, OH YEAH! Give me a full english and I'm happy all day. Since Polo bar is located opposite of Liverpool street station we decided to get out of London to the nice and fresh air in the countryside. Find nice colours and maybe some wildlife... And there I have to challenges I wasn't even supposed to enter! |

My alarm is set for 3.30 and will be heading out - couldn't find my torch, which may prove to be a bit of a problem, and nor can I find my cable release which may prove more of a problem, but will see what I can do. |

Just over a week ago, as we left Queensland to come back home, our new son-in-law made a point of escorting us past a swamp with rising mist at sunrise - about 4-30 am. (Sun gets up earlier there than here in spite of them not having daylight saving.) Dang date requirements!

Last night I was sleeping fitfully. As 2:00 came and then 3:00 I thought that I might as well get up at 3:30 and head for the front door, camera in hand.
wouldn't you know. The next time I saw the LED it read 4:46 and with 14 minutes left in the window, I said a rude word, which would never be heard on DPC and returned to my pillow.
Wish me better luck and better language tonight. |

I'm not complaining about this challenge (I think it's pretty silly to do so), but I want to understand what makes this hour of the night so special. Couldn't the challenge just be something like "Nighttime"?
I guess what I'm really getting at is what do I learn between 4-5 that I wouldn't learn trying to take a photo at any other part of the night? To me it just seems dangerous to drive to a spot that I could get a nice photo when I'm so tired from waking up at a time that I'm not used to. |

By 4AM, the nightowls have fallen asleep. The earlybirds have not yet begun to stir. Civilian twilight is still more than an hour away. The waning moon is high in the sky. The nocturnal animals are in full hunt mode. The 4 - 5 AM hour has the least road traffic and the least number of people on the streets. In other words.... quietude and productivity. |

Just back from my nocturnal photography - can't believe how insanely busy town is between 4 and 5 am on a Saturday morning. Plenty of amiable drunks, vans loading and unloading, an ambulance and paramedics attending to a reveller who had imbibed too much (would have made for an excellent photo, but not really fair, so passed on the opportunity), shop refitters, street cleaners and kebab vans. Decided it was time to come home when a hoodie wearing youth started showing an undue amount of attention to my shiny new camera - he followed me all the way back to my car which was rather unnerving, so kept my tripod at the ready - luckily it wasn't required!
And now, back to bed for a couple more hours of sleep.
