Made it up to a 5.6 not long after I posted this. Steadily falling now though...

Ouch, the ones hurt this early in voting. Down to a 5.4
10/27/2010 11:55:51 AM · #28
Perhaps this is the usual and expected wave of tactical voters. Or maybe mine really sucks.
10/27/2010 12:12:28 PM · #29
Yeah, mine dropped overnight from over 6.8 to 5.6. I think the problem is with a challenge that handicaps us from the get go. We are trying to make the best out of a bad situation, crappy lighting. Perhaps the average voter just really wants eye candy.

You can blame me for that.

I've discovered I've broken a rule for basic editing. I guess what's super basic to me isn't considered basic, I didn't REALLY clearly understand the basic rules. So I want to remove my photo from the pool...can I do that? Before voting started I noticed I could, but not now?

I'm not trying to "cheat" my way to a no prize victory.....I just want to make pretty pics!

You can request a self-DQ on the entry. I think you need to go the help menu and select "contact us", and choose administrative inquiry. I think.

Mail sent, GOOD LUCK MY VIRTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY FRIENDS!!! For the record I think this is the rule I broke:

"spot-edit your entry, except to remove sensor dust or hot pixels."

I don't see anything in the "don't" that prevents me from duplicating my BG layer....but I've been told in private this isn't allowed. That's kinda important to point out I believe....? Maybe not to ya'll, but to a new person to the site.

For the record, I do tilt shift in photoshop. I like the control it gives me over the area of focus. My process is to "blur" the entire image in the amount I see fit to get the correct scale based on my distance from the subject....then to simply erase the are I want to be in focus. In terms of photoshop, this is a 2 step process and is very basic. That's where I went wrong. Like I said, not trying to DUPE anyone....just didn't fully understand "spot edit". But I guess erasing a section of your image is, in fact, a spot-edit.

Yeap...

I killed my photo during voting too... I cleaned up 2 tiny spots, nothing more :-\

Yeah, I mean this IS DIGITAL photography right, isn't "spot editing" one of the main advantages of shooting in a digital format?

Not complaining....I just want to play too!

To me there is a clear distinction in editing a photograph and having the end result look as intended by the photographer, as we have done, versus making the photo "into" something else with cloning and adding in elements from multiple photos.

Anyways....I look forward to the NEXT challenge....

True, but basic editing makes it more important to get things right at the camera. Some of my strongest entries have required the least editing, because everything was right at capture.

Wait until you enter to a "minimal editing" challenge :P

That covers it. Can't use layers containing pixels.

Ahhh, I didn't read the "you may"...figuring if it's not in the "you may not" list...by default I may.

DPC sure knows how to bring a guy back down after a top 10 finish :)

How come you have 100 votes, and I've only got 60? :/

Oh, I see, you have 58 votes and 100 views.

Yup, but you are still way ahead of me. I'm paying for my last couple of heavy hitters.

I don't know it seems everyone is getting pretty low scores. Mabey a 5.3 isn't so bad for this challenge.

I'm all the way down to a 5.1 from a 5.6 this morning.

I started off with 4.1 or something like that. i'm really glad i went back up, and looking at other's votes, i'm actually pretty happy with a 5.2. hah. how sad. i actually gave pretty good scores, there's a lot of them that i like.

Me too! I gave out some pretty good scores as well. I thought there were a lot of great images. I'm puzzled at why everyone seems to be judging so harsh. Mabey its because we all participated in the challenge and are more sympathetic to what we had to deal with to get a good shot.

OK, even I'll admit mine is kinda dull. But it WAS taken at noon on the ONLY sunny day we had this week!

It's OK, though. I've needed an addition to the sub-5 collection. :-)
