Voter #9 really hated it. Too bad, so sad. Can't please everyone.

Perhaps you can't put a rule on subjectivity.
Perhaps people's expectations DO have great variances.
However.. How can you get a bunch of 9s and tens, followed by 2s and 3s?
Are the people voting the 10 being too generous, or the ones voting 2 that hard to impress?
In the chalk challenge, Hot Pasta's photo was amazing.
There's no way it deserved a 2, regardless of how picky the voters are.
Perhaps the voting scheme should be a bit more transparent......

Everyone is allowed to use the voting scale as they see fit. The people who voted a 2 on Hotpasta's chalk entry probably felt that it was great eye candy, but that it did not connect with them, and that is what they voted on. If you were allowed to see others votes, you would probably find they voted high on some entries that did not do nearly as well on broad appeal, but that resonated with them. The highest averaging entries will always get a few low votes and the lowest ones will always get a few high ones.
In the case of my entry in this challenge, I knew I was entering a risky entry of a type that sometimes gets killed in the court of popular appeal. That 2 was expected.

I have been busy and not entered many challenges lately. Just tuned so not sure how it was doing earlier (not that it matters anyhow!) but not doing that poorly. I think I can confidently say I expect to finish in the Top 100! (and thanks for the comment whoever you were!) The images cover a wide range from obvious to trying to get something in to abstracts. I like the variety!

not a bad start, if I have learned anything on DPC, is what you start with means nothing. Still fun to see what the first few people think of it. |
I had one seriously crash and burn- dropped from almost an eight early on to a 4.3 on the first day of voting! Ouch! |

4.70 with 10 votes.
My first challenge in a very long time...
It was important for me to enter again and even if the effort of that day of photos left me exhausted, I'm very pleased.

Speaking of votes...maybe this should be in a new thread, but...I was wondering. Since you're allowed to vote in the same challenge that you entered in..wouldn't some people vote really low on the really good photos, just so their scores come out higher? I wonder...don't you?

This was discussed about 7839th times in the past... I am also for NOT to be able to vote to challenges we entered... however, it seems like people vote more to those challenges they entered themselves. I don't think this theory ever tested or proven, but that's what they (other people here) said, and case was closed for 7839th time
My score by the way is doing better :-)

If you have a look at the ribbonned photos you'll see some 1, 2 and 3, well maybe those votes came from people who expected to win and gave a low score to "rivals" or simply it's that the voters just didn't like the photo. Hard to know.
If you don't feel at ease voting in a challenge because you entered a photo, you don't have to vote but I'm sure that comments will be welcome.
For many of us it's nice to know that someone has taken the time to leave some words.

I was just wondering if anyone else was wondering about the fact that great pics get votes of 1 and 2, and so far, even if that's the case, it still seems like the ones that won were well diserved. I didn't realize this was already discussed previously. I, myself am honest with the votes , but i wouldn't be suprised if some people try to cheat their way to the top. Oh well, I was just curious. no biggie. |

Good pictures do end up getting suspect low votes which could mean many things to different people.. Some of the votes are genuine while others are just made by nutty people but don't worry because there are checks and balances implemented by the site owners so suspicious activity by a voter is being noted (Enough of a hue and cry has been made in the past to allow such developments). Besides one vote out of a hundred doesn't make that big a splash on the final score.
