Hello! I am new here. I am shopping at the moment for a camera. I have always shot SLR and am looking to buy a digital now. My friend turned me on to this site... he is very knowledgeable in this field but i want to get others opinions. I want to be able to take amazing pictures and not be too limited by the options of my camera, but at the same time I dont want to deplete my savings account! Right now I have a 300mm lens from my film SLR but have been told that it really doesnt make sense to use it with the digital because of the lack of communication between the box and the lens. I am going to need a zoom lens to go with the camera that I choose to buy which is another expense I would like to keep in mind! Any help suggestions, ideas, sites, will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you, Megan

If you don't want to break the bank but you still want the flexibility of an SLR than you've got two options... a Canon dRebel or a Nikon D70.

What's your primary system? If it's Nikon go with the D70. Hands down, excellent camera that reacts like a film body. Canon, do 10D. It's a bit more expensive, but you will outgrow the crippled feature set on the 300D fairly quickly.

And the firmware hack for the 300D doesn't fix everything. :)

If I had to choose again, I'd save up and get the 10d. The D70 seems like the next best option, then the 300d. I really wanted the Canon lens line up, though, so my decision was overly influenced by that fact (and the lack of funds to go for the 10d).

i second that - and will get a canon upgrade at some point in the future - using the 300d for a back up possibly.
