The bright colors of the original would never make it to the newspaper and the water looks awfully muddy. The black and white one looks like they are sailing off into a storm and would need a different headline (allthough the original could do with a different headline also).
I like the B&W one better and might have given it an extra point.

I think a newspaper would require a closer shot of the boat... even to the point of just the people on it, and a bit of water and boat so you can tell its a boat, if that makes sence.
Newspapers tend to be very tight crops of the absolute subject... as a photograph however I think the second one definatly captures a moment and looks far more stunning... definatly something I would put on my wall :-)
Also as it was "...yacht race start..." if it were a newspaper shot, surely it would be of a large number of boats... the repro quality in a newspaper would be crap and lacking in detail, but then again when has that ever stoped papers, lol.
