A colleague is selling his film slr with a 28-90 mm, 90-300mm and a 2x teleconverter all EF fit for £60.

To me this seems to be a bargain so i am considering buying the lot even if it is just for the 28-90 and 2x converter, but as the lenses are used on a film camera and my knowledge of cameras and equipment is still in the novice region i am looking for some advice to ensure i dont spend £60 on items that will be of no use.

I currently have the Canon 450D with 18-55mm, 75-300mm and a Vivitar 2x teleconverter (manual).

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Canon 28-90mm is a very poor lens, primarily plastic, with a plastic lens mount, and bad performance at the edges of the image. I wouldn't want to own it. The 90-300mm came in USM and non-USM versions; the USM version may be a slight improvement of your 75-300mm.

The 2x teleconverter, IF it is a Canon converter, (not Vivitar or other brand), will be the version I, not the new version II — the version II is going for $300 and I'd expect Version I to be worth maybe $150 used. It's a very good converter, but it can only be used with lens of f/2.8 or faster if you want to maintain autofocus...

That's the information I can come up with quickly :-)

To be honest I`d give it a miss. Bear has pretty much nailed it, basically you would be buying for the sake of buying it.. Maybe you could buy them for £60, then knock them out on ebay for a small profit to some mug who `thinks` they need these lenses - but I personally dont think you will get much use out of them.

Thanks for the responses, it turns out the owner has a Canon 500D and the lenses dont fit so i dont think they will fit mine either, the owner contacted me and the teleconverter is a Jessops version so seems there wouldnt be much point in getting it.

Overall it looks like it would be a mistake so i will give it a miss.

The 28-90 should fit.. But it is pretty wretched for IQ and i know nothing of the 90-300. I agree with the 'miss' though.
