Today you have a traitor among you in your fair country but he's not an American, he's a Canadian. His name is Gilles Duceppe and he heads the Bloc Quebecois political party that wants one thing and only one thing; for Quebec to separate from Canada and become a sovereign country. He's in your country to promote his idea of creating an illusion that Quebecers want to separate. This is untrue. The majority of Quebecers, which is growing day by day, do not want to separate, they want to remain Canadians. The polls show this every time one comes out.
So don't go believing all the bullshit that this insignificant politician has to say about what we as Quebecers want. He is out of the loop and has been for a while. It's a wonder he still gets the votes to remain in power. Even Quebecers are asking questions about his role in federal politics. He is the sole reason we have a minority government in Canada today. He's part of the political elite in Quebec who think that separation is the only way Quebec will survive although Quebec is already surviving very well being a province in Canada. In fact Quebec is doing very well economically even while the US and some parts of Canada are still struggling.
Poll after poll we see the same results, separation is on the minds of politicians and not the population. Even the French are siding with federalism these days.
He wants to stay in power and he uses this old excuse of separation as his mandate, which goes against what his flock are seeking.
Hypocrit in Washington
CBC news
Macleans article
PS. I know this means nothing to almost all of you but I wanted to get the message out there.
PS. He's visiting the Woodrow Wilson Insitute btw and I just read this quote from WW himself.
"I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men." -Woodrow Wilson, after signing the Federal Reserve into existence
Kind of fitting seeing Duceppe is among a very small minority.

that's actually funny you put that last line in there, becuase I was going to ask why you were posting this. We Americans are the most ignorant, uninformed group of people on Earth. We don't care about Quebec leaving Canada, unless they want to join the Union, and even then we probably wouldn't care becuase you aren't Mexicans.
BTW, from your description, this guy is going to fit right in in Washington.

Don't be too sure.... I was a permanent resident in Canada during the 1995 referendum and 49.42% voted yes to a separate Quebec. Too close for comfort if you ask me! Lucien Bouchard should've been charged with treason. As should Duceppe. |

Well, this is an international site (I still remember the reaming I got when I didn't know what A4 paper was).
Anyway, I was relieved to find this thread wasn't about American politics. |

Speak for yourself! If Quebec leaves Canada wouldn't that leave a big open space there that could throw the continent off balance and cause us to tip over? |

Or merely a statement of the obvious ... like how did they find room to pack in another one? I was mentally flipping a coin to decide if it would be a politician or a lobbyist ... |

That looks like it'll cost tax payers trillions. My plan would be much more cost effective, which would be to simply blow up the rest of Canada. That would create a new Grand Artic Ocean, which Quebecers would be free to exploit for oil. In time the explosives would pay for themselves. Win win.

Just make sure you configure it so that the new, permanent Northwest Passage lies within territorial waters, so you can charge shipping tarrifs ... |

and what will you do when my country decides that you are harboring terrorists. Sure the soviets may come to your defense, but then Quebec becomes collateral damage. |

Reminds me of the story about the guy who was walking on the beach at Santa Monica, where Interstate 10 ends, and he stubbed his toe on an ancient, tarnished lamp. So he rubs it to see what it's made of, and pops a distinctly cranky, querulous Genie who said, "You can call me Art, and I'll be your Genie today. In the current economic climate, we've had to scale back operations, so you're only entitled to a single wish. Choose well. And make it snappy, I'm way behind schedule!"
So the guy starts whining "Chit! Just my luck! Something good finally happens to me and it turns out to be a cut-rate operation :-(" (etc etc)... Art the Genie says, "Look, dude, time's running out, I'm about to walk, we don't have a contract until you make a wish." So the guy says "Alright, I've always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I'm deathly afraid of flying and I get violently seasick in the bathtub, so do me this: build me a bridge to Hawaii."
Art goes bonkers, screamin' and cussin' "You got any IDEA how deep those footings are gonna have to be? You have any CONCEPT of the engineering difficulty in erecting footings in the trans-pacific subduction zone? Are you totally out of your mind? This is freaking UNREASONABLE. Why don't you just try to get rich or something like all the other suckers?"
Finally, dude's had enough of the pissing and moaning and says, "Look, Art, forget I even asked. I'll give you something simpler. No heavy lifting involved. Just answer a question for me. My wife has left me, my girlfriend thinks I'm a dweeb, I never can seem to get anything right around the fairer sex, it's never good enough, so just tell me: What do women want, anyway?"
Art the Genie staggers back a step, lifts his head and stares right in the dude's eyes as he responds; "Will that be two lanes or four, dude?"
(drum roll...)

Now, don't you admire my restraint in not posting that joke 45 minutes ago? ;-) |

Admit it, you're glad I'm the one that had to spend 5 minutes typing it out. And you admire the "arty" touch. Admit it :-)

Back to the original topic, I would hardly call Gilles Duceppe "insignificant". Despite the politics of separatism, he is a respected and well-liked politician. He's the longest-serving party leader in the Commons. During debate and interview, he comes off as intelligent and affable, and never lets an opponent dodge a question (much like Lucien Bouchard -- do you remember his performance against Kim Campbell?). His politics are left-leaning and secularist, and he routinely advances the rights of social and ethnic minorities.
Despite any of this, he and his party always win a majority of the seats in Quebec during federal elections. That is not an insignificant achievement, because he obviously represents a sizable population of Quebecers. He is "insignificant" only insofar as he is an irritant to federalists, rather than a successful separatist. Otherwise, he is an astute and highly successful politician. |
