Fill flash can be also a soft-box. That's also a flash with a diffuser. You don't have to see sharp shadows under the nose or eyes... Also, you can use multiple flashes which also eliminate the shadows. Fill flash with one or more flashes, using soft-box or not, they still are ok. Here is another thing you can try, use gels, or other coloring options on your flashes, specially multiple ones. You may come up with something very interesting. I bet we'll see lots of girls on the beach, or flying bikes, skaters... etc.

Although I believe fill-flash can be used as key when competing with strong ambient light, I chose to be use safe with a 40% flash/ambient ratio, using the natural light as key.
