i don't have a photo in this weeks categories, but i am wondering how closely people judge each photo. i tend to view the photo as a whole, and not get tied up in minutia, but i was wondering how involved some of you guys get when judging photos.

I look at the photo as a whole, and also the details. I score based on everything.

Well, I have to admit that I am losing a lot of faith in our voting public. My photo is scoring a low 4.6 (2 comments and over 100 votes)... less than average (5.5 is athe middle of voting) and I have to say that my photo is at least AVERAGE!!!! It meets the challenge, without a doubt. Focus is clear... there's even a message, regardless if you approve of (or even understand) the message or not.
I never presume I have the best photo, but I always feel confident that my work is better than average. Frankly, I feel that our voters are generally too 'consumer-ish' for my style.
My next photo (may not be the Travel Challenge) will be more appealing... and less honest to myself.

I tend to vote on the overall appeal of a photo. This is not a long process. I either like it or I don't. I try to leave comments on as many photos as possible. This reallly helps me appreciate the different elements of a photograph. Having said this, I sometimes don't give a second chance to really plain/technically shaky looking photos (picture of a figurine, a picture that is way too buzy, something that is too abstract). Sorry, I'm getting better though.
You know what has helped me in photography?. I got myself an in-house critic. I ask my wife what she thinks of my photos: if she likes it, I ask her to point out why, If she doesn't, discard the picture. She loves my hobby, but she doesn't do any photography herself. Sometimes I'll do something that was really hard technically, but really doesn't appeal to her because she doesn't know how hard it was. Those kind of shots won't do well on DPC. You have approx. 2 seconds to Wow your audience, that's it.
I dunno, just my $.02 ($.0316 Canadian). Merry Christmas!!!

I feel that a score of 5 is an average photo(a snapshot). If the photo is out of focus or the lighting and framing is off, I study it and decide if it was intentional and score either down or up from 5. When a picture comes up and causes me to say "wow" then I know that is a ten. If it causes me to say "wow", but there are some flause(sp) then I give it an 8 or 9. Very rarely do I give out 1-3 scores. It has to be a pretty bad picture or has nothing to do with the challenge. I do think some people score 1-3 when the picture doesn't deserve it, but such is life at DPC.

When I started scoring photos I was very impressed with what I saw, and almost never gave scores 1-3, with rare 4s.. However, I've since decided to rate the photos as they compare with the rest of the dpc shots. The way I see it is that if you've got a 10 point scale, it's pointless to only use half of it (your votes end up having less eventual influence that way). I still rate few 1s or 2s, but I do give more 3s and 4s than I used to. However, when I give low scores I ususally try very hard to give comments about what it was that turned me off to the photo in question, because from my experience with submitting I know that I'd much rather be told what the problems with my low-scoring submissions were than get "cool shot" comments on higher scoring submissions. |

Wingy, do you give out as many 10's then 1's and as many 9's as 2 or 8's as 3's. I would like to know what you consider a 1, 5, and 10. By using photos as an exsample.
