We're planning a trip to Ithaca; we have two days...
We plan to photograph during magic hours, hike in between.
I'm wondering if Taughanook is worth one of those days? I've been to Buttermilk, and Treman, and loved both of those. And of course Ithaca falls. It's been a couple of years though, so I wouldn't mind going back to Buttermilk and Treman. But should I skip one of those and do Taughanook?
Anything else to see and photograph?
Thanks in advance!

I've been to Buttermilk and Treman - never been to Taughnannaock but hear it's gorgeous. Depending on your reason to visit Ithaca and what time you have available you might try Watkins Glen - only 30 minutes away according to the net (never been there either - amazing since I've lived most of my life in upstate NY).
Also depending on how you're returning home from Ithaca you could follow Route 13 up thru beautiful farm country to Chittenango Falls (Or take I81 North to Route 20 and head east to Cazenovia). From Caz take Route 13 to the Falls. The road goes over the Chittenango creek just above the falls - you can walk down to the bottom of the falls -kind of hard to take pictures from the road as there are alot of trees and no parking along the road. You can then continue on Route 13 to Canastota and catch the Thruway there to get back home. Falls colors are just starting to turn now - should be great for shooting within the next couple of weeks. |

We lived in Ithaca for a couple of years, and went back to visit 2 years ago. It surely is one of the most beautiful places!
Taughanook is very nice. It's a nice walk along a very, very flat river that's wonderful to walk in. It leads to a tall waterfall at the end. I put some of our pictures from 2008 up for you to browse:
Taughanook
Patches is right -- take some time and go to Watkin's glen. It is truly spectacular. An incredible gorge with waterfall upon waterfall and wonderful rock carvings from the water over the years. Here are some pictures of watkin's glen, from the same trip in 2008.

Edited to add:
Best restaurant in Ithaca
The Souvlaki House
A ma & pa (actually two brothers) hole in the wall greek restaurant. Incredible food! The same as it was 18 years ago, and it was incredible then!
What to get for breakfast
Collegetown Bagels
They ruined me for any other bagels.

When are you coming Neil. I'd love to get together if the timing works out.
Taughannock is definitely worth it if you've never been before. Treman is always my favorite, but since you've done that before you should check out others. I'd also agree that Watkins glen is well worth the drive over. It has more falls than any of the other parks. Shoot me a pm if you want any specifics. |
