Who do you guys like for renting lenses and what would you rent for a balloon festival? We will be in New Mexico for 10 days. I'm really excited. We will go to the Balloon Fiesta several times but that isn't the only thing we are doing while we are there.
We have these lenses for both of us.
Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical IF for Canon
Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di II LD for Canon
Suggestions?

when I went to the balloon festival here...I used on the ground my 18-135mm and changed very, very quickly to my 70-300mm when they started to go up...it's a super, super fast time taking pictures, it took about 30 minutes to fill the balloons but it went soooooooo fast and I felt very, very rushed...
will you be able to get ON to the field where the balloons are filling up? is there a camera club in Albuquerque that you can tag along with to get onto the field (that was what I did)...they welcomed me to join them, which was very nice...but normally all the spectators are kept at "bay" and aren't allowed close enough to the balloons.
Are you going to Santa Fe? and Tios? Both are beautiful and you guys would love it there. How many days are the balloons going up?? |

I've been to two balloon festivals in the kansas city area over the past month. I've just used my 24-70mm and liked a lot of my results. As the balloons are going up, it was the right choice.
I do wish I would have had a 2nd camera with a 70-200 ready to go once the balloons were up and sliding across the water. A few intentionally came down over the trees, touched the water, and bounced back up, with the water pouring out of the basket. I needed a 70-200 to capture that shot well.
But I agree with Ja-9. Everything happens so, so fast. You don't have much time to think and react. You have to make decisions, and run to the spot you want to be at as the balloons go up and start to move. But that's what makes it exciting. I didn't have the same issue that Ja-9 had. The balloonists welcomed us getting in there and taking shots... until the crowds picked up during the night glow and tether.
And one other suggestion, watch the weather and the wind reports. That will help you determine the best place to set up, if you're not interested in running around as much.

I couldn't tell you which lenses, but I have rented from www.lensrentals.com twice now and had great experiences both time. I really like them.
Have fun!!! |
