I think there are three possibilities for sports photography:

- Bright mid day sun
- dark stadium lit by woefully inadequate lights (at least from a photography perspective)
- lovely overcast day but wait! Its pouring rain/snowing/bringing all manner of precipitation and cold down on the photographer

As for the original question. Shoot wide open, get your shutter speed up. Underexpose your subject by roughly two thirds and to hell with the background. Who wants to see "those" people anyways? :)

Exactly... the subject is what's important. The rest is just clutter, anyway.

agree, even if it's blown white, which I sometimes like anyway.
