So have you ever seen advertisment for a photographer, then just to see how they are, you look at their website. Have you come accross photographers who's advertisement is better than there work?
Since i graduated a yr early, i have recieved mailers for photographers who want work for senior protraits. But today, what i just described happend. The add looked really great! But when i checked their site...OMG how are they getting work?! you know those little studios in the mall that have OK shots? this is the quality of work this photographer had except it was worse! and the editing that they did was odd... anyways...
PHOTOGRAPHERS: atleast have an honest representation of your work!
There is my rant...and now im done...

Yup. I ran into a guy at an airshow one time. Gave me his card. Ooooh, a pro. Impressive card, impressive equipment. He must be pretty good. When I looked at his site, the examples of wedding photography looked like quick snapshots. There was one portrait that was terrible. A black woman, standing in front of a dark green shrub, with the focus on the shrub instead of her. I've seen first efforts from Photography newbies on DPC that were way better. He has updated his site since then. Someone must have told him how bad it looked, but I can't believe anyone would post those in the first place.

Great point. I know one person locally that is quite busy and yet her work is quite bad. I couldn't figure out how she was so busy with horrible work (she had a couple decent shots that she advertised with but 98% of her work was just bad) turned out she just knew a lot of friends from college and she was charging $20 for a shoot and giving them a cd included for that price with everything she shot. And i do mean everything. Maybe i am just jealous since it is a lot harder for me to get solid work. |

No reason to be jealous. that is NOT solid work. |

True. I just gotta keep plugging away and marketing myself and hopefully things will take off. Slow and steady I suppose. |

It's great to see there is low quality out there, all the more possibility that I can make it in photography soon.
There is even a photo editing business out there for those who would rather pay others to do all post processing.
Then there are people like me. I can do some decent photos, but my website needs work. they say you should hire others to do some things like websites. I'm not an expert in building websites but have been a programmer/analyst so I do understand a lot.

Easy solution.. Tell them that"you've heard that drug addicts often do similar things" and insist that they take a drug test.. That'll teach them.. :) |

business is a three-legged stool: production, sales & marketing, and administration. if the legs aren't even, you'll be struggling to keep your seat. if the legs are completely uneven, you'll simply topple over.
most small businesses fail because the owner is trying to sit on a one-legged stool: production. they love doing the work of the business (baking the cake, taking the pic, making the dress), but more often than not don't have a clue about sales & marketing, or admin, or both.
the funny thing is, those that excel in sales in marketing usually last longer, especially if they're able to figure out how to do the work they're selling before people catch on that they can't really deliver... |

I'll bet I know a guy who'd do your senior portraits for free, and he's really good. Maybe not completely free... you might have to make a deal to put the lens caps back on his lenses. ;-D |

Truer words have not been spoken. I know a local guy here that is a marketing "genius;" he does really good at selling himself. His pictures? um, meh. Really not good. |

[deleted]..."sales & marketing", hence the ampersand joining the two items into a singular leg

"Can't" is spelled with an apostrophe in the context you used it.
Without that punctuation your title means "Why people who lean over get it right" which -- just guessing now -- is not what you meant. That's also why I misspelled "don't" in my earlier post, to mirror the same typo.
I can fix the title if you want -- it doesn't matter that much to me (though it might make searching for the thread title harder) -- but it might to the Grammar Police currently patroling the forums.

Since it's pick on Scooter week, I tried to point out a spelling error in her store score addiction thread but I don't think she picked that up.
