Disappointed with the lowish placing. Happy with the comments it did receive though. The blur was entirely intentional when photographing the image.{1/40s at f4.5} It was not achieved during post processing. It was meant to create a feeling of spirituality in a dreamlike way. The bird not a bird but the representation of a spirit set free from it's earthly bonds. I am afraid most voters did not see it like that at all.

If you like your photo, please don't be disappointed. Have you achieved your personal goal to represent a free spirit ? Do you like the result ? If you answer yes, then that should be the most important point, not that other viewers didn't catch it.
When a photo is more about "feelings" then don't expect many people to "understand" your point of view. In this community there are people from so many countries, with different beliefs and of course personal tastes. And there's no accounting for taste...
Keep the positive side, you have received nice comments, your photo has reached people (maybe these are more open mind or share a sensitivity similar to yours, I don't know...).

I never worry if people like my shots or not. If they do - great, if they dont that's fine. I take photos that I like to take rather than taking photos to please others.
I liked your shot a lot !

I also would like to ask you to check out Lab color space, ideal for this picture.

I am afraid that you misinterpreted what I said. I am not worried about it and I also do not take photo's to please other people generally. This is however a photo challenge site and I do enter photo's hoping they will do well and will be well received and interpreted. I am sure many other members feel that way too. Yes I am disappointed that I did not place higher in the results and I'm a bit sad that a lot of people did not get my intention or meaning behind the photo at all. The blur was intentional (f4.5 at 1/40s) as I wanted to achieve this effect. Also it makes me happy that you like the image.

Thanks. Not sure what you mean or what exactly I am meant to do when you say I should check out lab color space for this picture. Please elaborate.

If you use PS you will note 3 different color spaces, CMYK, RGB and Lab. I wish more people would discover Lab, check out "Photoshop LAB Color" written by Dan Margulis. Difficult reading, difficult concept. But magic. let me have your email I will send you a copy of the book, I have it as a pdf. |

Maybe my comment sounded too harsh, it was not my intention. I like photography, I liked to take photos and I enjoy a lot seeing photos.
Posting a photo on a challenge is entering a competition. If I have a look at the highest voted photos of the Skyscape challenge, what do I see ? Dramatic skies, great clouds, rich vibrant colours or also cold blue tones in a diverse style, there are very nice photos. Technically there's little to critique. On the emotional side, it's different, aside the magic of Mother Nature.
I like this one , it finished 112th !
I just have had a look at your portfolio, you clearly have a style, it's something I've never had.
You can continue your way, with your style, with your personal point of view, your preferences for the edition or you can try to change to "please" more people, it's up to you.
My only advice would be to explore more the edition side.
(Sorry I can't remember how to post a thumbnail, would appreciate any help !)

I'll second this. And if you're a member at KelbyTraining.com check out the LAB courses by Dan Margulis. The courses help with the tough concepts outlined in the book.

The one a +7 score, can not see how, the second one same day, but processed in the LAB color space later on. I could get things done with LAB that surely is an improvement. |

Mambe, the number that you used is the 7 digit number for this thread. To post an image thumbnail, you have to open the image, and use the six digit number at the end of the URL for the image.
It's good to see you becoming active here again after being on the side for so long.

Call me a philistine, but I prefer the first one. The second seems to have an overall blue tinge. I will look into the whole LAB thing though - always good to learn new tricks. I seem to recall having done a tutorial on LAB sharpening to avoid halos but never used it in anger. |

I hope to stay around, with no camera I can't enter any challenge but I'm voting and commenting. |

Hi PJ. Thanks for the feedback and info offered. No I don't use photoshop. Too technical for me. I am an amateur hobby photographer. I use a program called LightZone which I find pretty easy to use. Do check it out. I don't know if the Lab Color space applies to it.

Ps. Checked out your portfolio and you have some absolutely stunning images in there.

Hi Mambe. No, I never felt your comment was harsh at all. Thanks for looking at my portfolio. I don't know if I have a style and if I have I am not sure that I like really like it or if it represents what I wish to portray in my photography. Not that I really know what it is that i want to portray anyway. I think I am still searching for my style or trying to discover my style and I am not sure if I will ever discover a particular style. I just don't really know. One day I do and the next i don't.
Mambe..where's your camera then? You did have one and I like the images in your portfolio. You definitely must get another camera.

I have had too many unexpected expenses and I can't afford a new camera. My only income is a disability pension and there are rumours that next year the monthly amount will be lowered. |

Well that's not a pleasant situation to be in and I am sorry to hear that. I think a plan needs to be put together to get you a camera so that at least you will be able to pursue your love for photography and to enable you to compete in the challenges here again. I see that there are members here offering equipment for sale and I am sure we can rally enough members to contribute towards raising the amount needed for getting you a nice camera again. I am going to open a separate thread for this on the members forum. Do you still have any equipment left such as a lens Mambe? I see you had a Canon Rebel 350 before as your last camera.

ThingFish - you've been here longer than I have; you know that more than likely the photos you LOVE will not finish well. This image of mine was the one that drove that lesson home for me:
Don't let it get you down.
Yes, this is a competition and as such you wanna do well, but this is also "art" and as such there is no accounting for what folks like and what they don't like. (Just so you know your photo "got" me....it also got a 10 from me).
Right now I have a challenge entry that is in the basement....but again, I love the photo!
I don't think I'll ever be in running for a ribbon. Probably not even in the top 20. I come to DPC to get ideas for things to shoot and in doing so hopefully learn a thing a two. |

My "poster child" example of why overall average score is not the most important factor:
It did a mid pack finish, and I knew there would be many people who thought it was poor or "just ok". There were plenty of those. But it got comments and faves from exactly the folks I was hoping it would appeal to, and a high commenters average. This shot continues to grow on me and I consider it to be one of my most successful entries.
On the other had, this one did slightly better on score, but it was totally uninspired, boring and was done just to keep in the "beat your average" side challenge. The commenter's average is lower and no faves. Honestly, this entry got better than it deserved in voting. If I encountered it in voting I would have likely given it a 6, but I'm a generous voter.
Anyway, my point is that you have to look at more than the average vote received to determine if you nailed what you were after.

Thanks Joe, I hear ye. Hey that's a real cool photo. I love it and that dog looks exactly like my dog Bindi. They could be twins, seriously.
