Today I was planning to go out shoot some flower in macro mode using my new mini tripod to get some extreme close-up. With that in mind I decided to measure the minimum focus point in macro mode at different focal length. I did it by shooting a measuring tape. I discovered that the actual performance of my camera was not on spec but in fact... better? The really really strange thing is that not only the performance of the camera is better than the spec but the closest macro focus range availlable is NOT at wide angle. Actually at wide angle (34mm equi.)the closest focus is at 4 inch (the spec says 3.9 so it's okay). At 50mm equi. the closest focus range is 3 inch (it should be 6 inch) and at telephoto (136mm equi.) the closest focus range is 5 inch and it should be 15.7. Is that possible? Do somebody encountered the same situation?

Sometimes the measurements in the spec sheets for focus distance are measured from the sensor plane, not from the front element. Granted I don't think your measurements make sense for that either so I'm kinda perplexed as well :P

What are you focusing on?
The focus distance is a set plane distance from the lens, but in front of and behind that plane is the range of acceptable sharpness of focus commonly called depth of field.
If you are measuring the focus distance from image produced, you are measuring the front edge of the DOF, not the actual distance to the focus point.
