I just noticed this with my extraordinary submission that my camera has phantom shutter speeds. What I mean is exif info is reporting a shutter speed that my camera does not have, namely 1/394th. What is going on here with my possessed camera? :)

I've seen this before... Sometimes a camera will report "interesting" speeds especially when the camera is in fully-automatic mode. A friend of mine recently took an image for a challenge with an Olympus camera... the EXIF reported it was taken at ISO 371.

I also have seen these "odd" settings, most notably with my Nikon 995. I don't seem to see them with the 10D, but then again I pretty much never shoot in automatic mode with it. I think automatic mode is the key, there are prolly intermediate settings that the camera can use other than those accessible in manual, Av, or Tv modes.

My "possessed" shot was taken in fully manual mode and I've never used Av or Tv modes. I guess it's just a fluke.

maybe the camera was reporting the "accual" speed. That is very close to 1/400th of a sec. Is that what you were shooting on? If so, it may have closed a fraction of a second to soon. In fact, I bet cameras often don't get the exact speed the were set on. |

I seem to recall that the Canon's record two different Tv (and Av) values. One of them might be "more correct". I thought one value was for what the camera "wanted to take" and the other was for what it "actually took". Who knows.
Note that the Tv value is stored in the file as some value, N, and the shutter speed is calculated as 1/(2^(N/32)). If N is 276, you'll get (assuming truncation) 1/394. Which program are you using to read the exif data. Some programs use lookup tables to spit out values that are familiar.

I was using file info within Photoshop 7 not File Viewer Utility and that reports 1/350th.
