Here is a very interesting video for anyone that has an iMac and is struggling with the super glossy display . .

reducing the gloss on an imac

Interesting but not sure I would make it permanent as I wouldn't want extra dust and whatnot getting into the unit. I bought a second screen for photo editing and that works well.

You paid out for an imac . . and then got another screen just for photo editing ?

Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of having a small footprint, fancy pants, all singing all dancing imac ?

Yes but I purchased my imac prior to getting serious with the photography so this was a good fix to last until I upgrade the computer.

I got an imac 27 earlier this year (my previous imac was the older 24-white-plastic version with the matte screen) I was dubious about the high gloss screen, but found it not really to be an issue. Plus, the overall image quality of the new screen is so much better than the older one, well, it is just hard to find a serious problem.

The video is interesting on a few levels--had no idea it was so easy to remove the front glass, had no idea that dust behind the glass would be a serious enough concern to pull the glass and clean it. I suspect that guy is very finicky, indeed.

But it is good to know that, should I ever need a matte screen in a hurry, I can lift the glossy glass out like that.

I don't think bravery is necessary. Macs seem to be made so components are easy to remove/replace.

LOL! I can understand your reluctance to do anything that involves glass then. Though knowing you're a klutz should mean that you'd take more care with the project to avoid you're klutziness (is that a word?).
