I was looking at the Nikon 7000 specs, and a question that I've always wondered about was renewed...

Why do digital cameras have Focal Plane Shutters?

Can't they just sample the data from the CCD/CMOS sensor instead? Wouldn't that be better, since there's no mechanical requirements?

I can guess some answers having to do with (what I imagine is in) the CCD/CMOS specs, but I'm curious if anyone knows the real reason (not a guess!)

Digital cameras have shutters for a couple of reasons.

1. The shutter simplifies the electronics needed to control the sensor.

2. The sensors without the electronics are also a little more efficient at utilizing the light gathered than the ones where the shutter is electronic.
