So I do the photography for our swim team, and I'm doing photos for our little league team as well. This is my contribution as a team parent, so I'm not charging for this. It's my gift to the team and to the other parents that are coaching/helping out, etc.

I sent some photos of fall ball opening day to the newspaper, and I had to contact another team's coach to get the names of their players that were in my photos. That coach is interested in me doing some action shots of his child.

I started writing the email, telling him my hourly rate and the prices I charge per photograph. But then I started thinking...

If I go and shoot his child's game, there is absolutely no guarantee that his child will even get on base, much less have any action shots. At least when you're shooting a swim meet, you're going to get a picture of the child diving/swimming. In baseball, all that's guaranteed is a picture of the child batting -- after that it's debatable whether you'll even have a chance at a shot.

Have you shot sports for a customer? How do you handle the fact that there might not be any shots?

help!

if it's the coach's kid and he's hiring you to shoot, you know the kid's gonna play ;-)

seriously, though, i cover this up front with the parent by asking out right if the kid plays. then again, there's nothing wrong with a shot of a kid cheering on the team mates or celebrating. every sport offers lots of opportunities, if you know what to look for. i also give the parents a realistic number of images to expect, as well as the type of images. most importantly, i suggest getting other parents in on the action and let them split my hourly rate...

I was thinking about that. The nice thing about fall ball is that I can actually go inside the fence and stand right in front of the dugout. I was a little concerned that I could get in trouble if I was doing it for profit for another team. If it was just the coach, then it probably wouldn't probably become an issue. But if other parents knew, someone could cause problems. I don't know... But it's good to know that you do that. Giving them a number of photos to expect is also a great idea. I've been shooting little league for 6 years now, but I've never offered it to other teams.
