I used to be a big fan of Nero software (Ahead Software). I was a Nero 6 user, then version 7, then I think it was 8 when they went awry and lost site of the basics, causing installation issues and generally not playing like a good app in the OS. Sort of the same thing that happened to Adaptec/Roxio EasyCD or whatever it was called before that (their big problem was their updates would sometimes "toast" your system settings, causing you to lose access to your optical drives without a major session in the registry).

So when I returned to the PC from my year of trying to be a Mac user (where I used Toast, a very basic but usable app), I looked for alternatives, and came up with Cyberlink Power2Go, and their DVD suite. The CD/DVD burner app was similar to Nero, though a bit less configurable and had a few quirks. And the video authoring tool was excellent. So I bought the suite. And it's worked pretty well, but again, had some quirks. One minor one that I found annoying is that sorts didn't stick -- in other words, if you sorted the burn list by file size to cull it down, after you delete an item, it reverted to the default sort. Another minor one is that their apps contain advertising for them--various options try to sell you on upgrades to the software, options, etc. And lastly, I started to have a problem with it remembering it's registered, so it was prompting me to register each time the app was run.

Anyway, to make a long story short, they have an upgrade to Power2Go now (7), and an upgrade to the MediaSuite (8). Of course, the MediaSuite has Power2Go6, and there's no automatic upgrade to 7. So effectively, you have to buy two separate updates (or wait a long time).

So I thought I'd see where Nero stands again. Looks like they have listened to some user feedback. Some web reviews seem to say that Nero is still the best burning software, but that Cyberlink Powerdirector (part of my suite) is the best movie editor.

Has anyone else made the comparison? Which do you use? What do you like best (or not like)?

One of the main features of Power2Go I liked (also in Roxio) is disc spanning. And now Nero seems to have it built in as well.

I like PowerDirector because it's extremely fast to generate output. I used NeroVision years ago and it was pretty good but also pretty basic with minimal editing capability. Looks like they may have addressed that in Nero10.
