I'd never seen one of these before moving to Virginia -- and I've only seen one twice in 5 years.
It's a katydid, and I think it's one of the coolest bugs I've ever seen.
It's a lousy photo, but for those of you who have never seen a katydid, they're basically a walking leaf! Look at his wings -- they have the entire structure of a leaf, veining and everything. Even his eye looks more like a dew drop on a leaf than an eye.
I just thought he was cool, so I thought I'd share. (I'd have a better picture, but I just put him on the dining room table, and could only use flashes. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the flashes, so I'm afraid I didn't get a good shot. He was very laid back and stayed there for about 5-10 minutes cleaning his feet. Once he started moving around more, I quickly brought him outside.)
Here's the one I saw 4 years ago. His name was Bob.

I love Katydids, though I have never seen them in nature myself (too cold up here). My favourites are the false dead-leaf katydids.
Animal Camouflage
Great examples of biomimicry. |

We've got those around here, too. Fun bugs.

A lot of distance, but this looks remarkably similar. This one flew into my home too! |
