Above is the last thing my Canon 40D saw before it's death.
What are the girls pointing at? A sudden flash flood of water that swept over the "dry" spot that my gear bag and their clothes had been sitting. Within seconds after this shot, the water the models are standing in was easily waist level and moving very rapidly - not a pleasant situation.
Yup, a sudden thunderstorm popped up and flooded the creek, quickly. It soaked two lenses, washed away some clothing. In the process of getting us out of there safely, I was forced to also neglect the camera hanging around my neck. Lives first, possessions later.
Anyway, the camera was soaked. After I got us dry, I took the battery out of the camera and placed the entire body in a sealed bag of rice (web tip). After several days, the camera would power on, but not much else. So, I put it back in the bag and left it a few more days. This time it powered on and seemed to act normally. Wooohooo... WAIT! So, I take it on a shoot, start shooting... get a lot of focus errors, bad exposures and then "Lens Communication Error" camera lockup. Nothing would get it to start working again. So, I resign myself to the fact the camera is severally injured and needs to be replaced or repaired. I set it to the side for about a month and switch to a backup 350D.
So, I decide I'm going to sell it as/is for someone that might want to buy it. Today, I had a model portfolio shoot scheduled and I'm convinced I'm selling it, so I take the camera along to see if I can get it to at least function long enough to tell the buyer what it's doing. Start shooting... no problems. 300 shots later, no issues, not even a soft focus.
The 40D is totally ALIVE!
BOOM! This is what it did today :-)

haha!!! What a story!! The camera that came back from the dead...
Now tell the truth, aren't you a little sorry that you don't have a reason to upgrade? :)

Great story however is seems that the camera had an issue before it got wet, it only took half a shot! |

Holy wowzers. Excellent story cheezeman! And, not a bad tip either (rice+time)...
I'm super impressed that it really worked... (soo, are you still cleaning bits of rice off the sensor? :) )..
And, that look on the left model's face... PRICELESS! :)
ETA: Call it the ZombieCam :)

Actually no, the auto sensor clean seems to have shaken it off. Was shooting at f/11 outside yesterday with no visible sensor dust on the photos.

OK... I've gotten a few corrupted files from it... wondering if it could be that the contacts on the card slot need cleaned?

By the looks of it your 40d saw some 40DDs before it's misfortune! |

Surely since this is your living the equipment was fully insured against this sort of thing? If that was mine the second it threw an error I would of been on the phone to my insurance company and got the wheels in motion for a `new for like` replacement. I`d never of had it sitting around for month and used a hugely inferior camera in its place. |

If I were shooting with top of the line equipment, such as the 1Ds Mk3, I'd insure the Hell out of it... personally, I don't feel the need to insure disposable items, such as mid-range bodies that I had pretty much decided to upgrade anyway.

Doesn't it come as standard with your public liability insurance and professional indemnity? I`d certainly check it out as you could come out of this with a brand new 50D or even 60D! |

Bump - did you check to see if its covered as standard? I am sur eyou have a pretty good case of a damaged camera there and just think - a lovely new 60D (or even a 7D!) could be sitting there waiting for you to claim. |

Nope, not covered under my liability or my renters insurance, unless I lie on the latter, which I'm not going to do.
