Unhappy with current noise reduction plug-in and trying to decide what to do. Anyone familiar with a review of the current crop of products? Haven't been able to find one via general search engine.

what are you using? I'm ecstatic about Topaz denoise. There's a new version (5). I think it's great. (keep in mind, though, I'm not very experienced with this. I've only used photoshop's denoise previously.)

I really like NIK Define 2.0. It's part of their great bundle with Color Efex and Silver Efex. |

I have Nik's filter as part of their Lightroom bundle suite, and I have NeatImage Pro. Of those two, I think NeatImage Pro works best.
However, recently I've been converted with some amazing noise reduction achieved with Topaz Denoise 5.0. Give it a try--there's a 30 day trial. It works very well. And for noise images, you can actually do pretty effective sharpening in the filter itself.

Using Topaz Denoise here as well. Tried the free trials of some other products in the past but none of them (including earlier versions of Denoise) had been significantly better than PaintShop Pro's built in NR.

Topaz DeNoise is just staggeringly good. I'm not aware of any product that can touch it. There may be one, but I'm not aware of it...

I rarely use NR software. I've got Imagenomic Noiseware Pro which is decent. However, since upgrading to Photoshop CS5, I believe the built-in NR in ACR could've very well replaced my need for any other NR software.

I bought Topaz Adjust, and so am on the mailing list for various updates. I use Neat Image, but was considering Topaz DeNoise, but then it seemed to me that I was inundated with so many updates... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
It made me wonder if they'd ever get it right, or just keep on pumping out updates to line their bank accounts.
So it's that much better than NI? |

seriously?? I must be doing something wrong or your updated paintshop has a way better NR... my paintshop NR stinks! I cant afford Denoise (which I love) so I just use the denoise portion thru the adjust... which is ok but still not up to the power and par of Denoise... I miss my trial!!

Yes, it's that much better. I still have Neat Image. Never use it now. As far as updates, they are, thus far, all free to registered owners. My Adjust has been updated twice, my Detail once, my Remask once, my Simplify once, and my DeNoise twice or maybe thrice since I bought them.
It's great customer service, is what it is. They keep improving their product, it generates buzz and sales, the additional sales finance more improvements, and all of this is passed on free of charge to the customer base. One of their people in a position of responsibility communicates with me directly, within 24 hours, whenever I email him with an issue.
I love the Topaz people and their stuff :-)

Lets get together on that in a PM and figure out if it is your older version or something you are doing differently. |

If you buy one version of Topaz ... all of the updates are free ... no need to shell out more cash! |

Doubly interesting since you posted twice;)
But seriously, ACR in CS5 has very good NR built in. It's very effective, and while I haven't pushed it terribly hard, the results seem less plastic than most other NR software I've used.

I'll have to decide what to upgrade, but I'm in no hurry. |

I have been using Noise Ninja from PictureCode for years now. I have no idea how it compares to current products, in fact I had never heard of Topaz until this thread. I'm not sure if my head has been in the sand or what. Does anybody use their products for more than noise reduction?

LOL... You really have been under a rock huh?
Yeah, Topaz is one of the great loveit/hateit things around here... Robert ( Bear_Music) is addicted to it.
As for quality vs. Noise Ninja? I used to use Noise Ninja... Wouldn't even think about going back... Noise ninja looses way too many details and creates plasticky looking areas..

The NR in Lightroom 3 is very good now - and its pretty much realtime at 100% zoom - the output version of the image is fantastic and has cut one big step out of my workflow now. Its liberated me (and my assistants) for shooting weddings - I am more than happy to crank upto iso2000 knowing that once bought into LR3 the noise can be brought under control with very great results.
However all this talk of TopazDenoise is very interesting indeed. Might check it out. |

The ACR in LR3 is the same as CS5 and yes, the results are great.

This totally calls for a head-head challenge between the two.. Just make sure that you really are taking full advantage of De-Noise 5.. |
