I have a tentative business trip to Birmingham, AL in mid Sept. I will be spending a week there. My evenings are totally free and I can extend to the weekend if I choose.

Looking for cool things to do and shoot.

There is a botanical garden, a zoo, a 100 foot tall statue of "Vulcan" from mythology. There is Oak Mountain State Park which contains lots of depression era stone work done by the CCC ( Civilian Conservation Corps). A stop at a visitor center will yeild much more.

You might try the Little River Canyon National Preserve. There is a short article about it here:
