For the July FS, I entered a shot of an American Kestrel shot in a nature park while on holiday in New Hampshire - Exhibit A:

Apart from many comments on the horror of my green border selection, which I have since regrettted... I got a very nice comment from scooter97 suggesting that he would have loved to see a free version of this bird in flight. Well, I thought, so would I. I thought it pretty unlikely though, since I only muster a 200mm lens at the longest.

Skip forward a few weeks, and I am out showing my visiting parents a nice coastal area (Bristol Channel, UK for those interested) to walk the dog, and to save weight (kicking myself now) borrowed my wife's 28-135mm on my 50D. What did we see but four (British) Kestrels hunting, seemingly oblivious. One allowed me to get pretty close - turns out he was watching me pretty closely, but these are shot at 135mm (slightly cropped to get rid of dead space!). Next time I am definitely taking the longest lens I can borrow!

So, scooter97, your comments are clearly lucky and prophetic - please keep them coming! ;o)

haha, I know your pain Frank! My best osprey shots, to date, are still with my 18-200! Every time I bring out my Bigma, the osprey are dormant and not interested in hunting. So, to date, I only have a couple of heavily cropped shots of osprey with fish, even though I've seen them plenty of times. Randomly lugging that bigma along is a task, yet it's something I've continuously kicked myself for.

these are great - once when i was walking over a flyover a kestrel was hovering not more than 10 feet away from me at my eye level - hunting mice or something on the embankment below - i stood and watched him for four or five minutes - wishing i'd had a camera with me

Thanks for the comments Alice and Art - I will try to get down there again with a longer lens, but the time of year may be against me...

Very nice shots Frank. It must have been exciting to be so close to the action. These are both shots I wish I had taken. Well done my friend :D
