| Is there any recommended alternative to 450d/400d in the canon or Nikon range? |

There's the 1000D, Rebel XS in the US. It's a step below the 450D, however. 10Mp instead of 12, and does not have spot metering. Lots of folks on this site have that one and like it.
What's the budget and how old a body are you willing to accept? (That sounded kind of adult in nature, didn't it?) |

| Are you looking at used or new? As far as Nikon goes, you're might want to check out the D40x (old), D60 (old), D3000 (current), D3100 (just came out), D5000 (current). |

After my experiences with my new 30D, what I do recommend is to look at eBay for used mid-pro cameras such as 30D or even 40D. There are somethings you must be checking before buying on eBay (assuming you have no or little experience) I have never had a lemon from eBay so far, since very long time (years). My lemon came from Amazon, which I did NOT check the seller, but the lens I bought from there is still usable.
Go to eBay, and check the prices of "Buy Now" Canon DSLRs (or Nikon). There are some very good prices for used (and good condition) DSLRs. Check the seller and make sure seller has at least 100 sales and 100% positive, or more than 500 and around 99%-98% positive feedback. Read the feedback and see what they are, sometimes bad feedback have nothing to do with the item, but probably shipment is slow or whatever.
After a very good purchase (hoping things go well, which usually do), and a nice camera with much lower price that you'd pay for a new 400-450, you can use the rest of the money to purchase a nice lens, or lenses from eBay once again following the rules (Checking the seller)
New items don't mean you got a worry-free purchase. i read many reviews on amazon (for new items) some of them have tons of factory defected items sent, over and over again. Not only amazon but B&H, or wherever you buy new camera. My very first camera Pentax had a hot pixel (it was brand new), after less than a year usage. My previous camera 350D had no problems what soever for more than 4 years of continuous usage (it was also brand new)
Make sure you get something you really want and like. They are out there. |

With a £500 budget, there are a huge amount of possibilities. In the Rebel line the EOS 1000D and 450D are relatively recent but have been on the market long enough that you can find some real bargains. Both have live view. As Leo said, the 30D and 40D are also good bargains if you prefer the larger and heavier duty semi-pro bodies. IMO, the 450D and 40D are the most bang for the buck quid on the used market right now.

Considering everything, am I right to say that the 30d isn't as good as the 450d, but the 40d is a little bit out of my price range so I think the 450d is my option. Hopefully it's bang for my buck quid. ;)
Whats nikon's alternative to 450d, d5000?

Check out eBay and if you want to wait and bid, you could possibly pick up a Nikon D90 with kit lens.
The Buy It Now ones are still a bit too pricy, but there are some bargains to be had, just be careful to check out the seller. I recently sold my D90 with grip, Tamron 70-300mm lens, 8Gb card, spare battery and bag for £670 on ebay. |

In some regards. The 30D has the magnesium alloy semipro body with some very convenient extra dials and switches. The 450D has a plastic body. The 30D is an older model and is only 8Mp vs the 450D's 12Mp. The 450D also has live view, where the 30D does not. Feature-wise the 450D seems to have a little more, but the 30D is a more robust semi-pro body. So, as with everything else, it depends on what is important to you. |

Just a sample what a 20D can do vs newer model 450D
More people owns 20D, and there is a good reason for that. It might not be perfect compare here, but just to show you sometimes live-view or more Megapixel has little to do vs sensor quality and other pro options. I am no way trying to give up your selection, 450D is a good camera, and I hope you will enjoy it for many years :) |

I think the higher proportion of 7's on the 20D page reflects on superior ability of the type of photographers who purchase the semi pro bodies. It's the photographer, not the camera. Just look at the results of any challenge and you will see people with relatively cheap equipment running circles around people with far better gear. Focuspoint himself is an excellent example of this.

My last two entries into challenges were shot with a 350D . It's a very capable camera. If you can find one used, it's not a bad investment at all. Then spend some money on glass (I suggest quality prime lenses).
My 40D is waiting for repairs or replacement, so I'm shooting most of my paid work with my backup 350D for now.
13th ain't too shabby for an older camera, a ducky, cigarettes and a gun :)
A current entry is running about 6.4 shot with a 350D :)

All of these cameras are very capable. Find one that fits your budget and buy it. Ofcourse the 20D and 30D are of better build quality, but basically will get you about the same image as the 350D.

Well the 450D is the most technically capable and ( I believe ) has a built in sensor cleaner. Like IS, once you have got useed to built in sensor cleaners you really don't ever want to go bac to dust bunnies . . I would go for the 450 for that reason alone.
These are great cameras that will do all that you want and more besides. I personally wouldn't recomend going back to older models for the sake of it.
Get the 400 or 450 and start taking some pictures. |

You've seemed to have researched Canon more than Nikon, so I won't muddy the water by making Nikon suggestions.
But here's something to think about. Camera bodies are "disposable" in the sense that one can't keep up with technology. Once you buy a machine (whether camera, car, etc.) and drive it off the lot, it depreciates and the technology is old because the next great thing/advancement is coming out next month, in a few months, next year (you get the point). In that regard, I agree with Jedusi in trying not to go old. But there are trade offs with everything.
For 500.00 pounds, you may be able to swing a Canon 500D new w/ an 18-55 IS kit lens. (If my handy conversion table is right. That model is under $700.00US at B&H; but I have no idea how much a 500D would cost you where you're at.)
I guess my thought would be get the most current camera you can afford (with a kit lens). Expand to additional lenses as you feel the need. And as the others have said, it's the photographer and not the equipment. [I'm the opposite example; decent camera, crappy pics :) ]
Best of luck in your endeavors.

I have the 400d and it also has the dust cleaning mechanism.
Personally I would start from a 400d in the XXXd range because it has a bigger screen than the 350d, dust cleaning and 9 focus points. For the XXd range I'd start at the 40d - has a bigger screen, live view and an information screen that comes up on the back (good for old eyes).
However, if you can get an amazing bargain for the 350d, 20d or 30d then take it and put the left over money into good lenses.
If you purchase an older body and later down the track can afford the latest and greatest, all your lenses will fit on the new body (except if you go full frame that is) you can always keep this first body as a backup or as a second body with a different length lens on when doing a job (always handy).

Yeap, then in 6 months time you will want the 7D , but the misses will say no, you will not speak to her for a few hours, she will give in, you realise you can't afford it anyway as the car needs a service, stair carpets need replacing, daughters 15th birthday coming and then Christmas, but of course, you don't tell her that, tell her, you are right darling, priorities first, as you bite your tongue so hard it bleeds and the world turns black, ALL BLACK, BLACK I TELL YOU, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA........and breathe, in, out, in, out
