Google something called the Lartique Effect; this link shows you one of the most famous photos of early times, made in 1913.
Here's some more examples of the rolling shutter on Flickr.
This sort of stuff is fascinating to me.

Ditto!
And thanks Robert for the link to the Lartique image. It was fun to read the debate about how the geometry of the image came about. It's pretty clear to me that the shutter moved from bottom to top, and that Lartique was panning, but slower than the movement of the car. Boy, that shutter must have been moving *slowly*! |

I made a prototype rolling shutter attachment for my DSLR. It worked the last time I used it, but the movement isn't smooth, so it makes jitters across the image and I never reworked it. Also, Robert Doisneau did some work with the effect back in his heyday...I'll see if I can find something to post later. |
