Dear American DPC friends -

I'm planning a visit, for a conference, and to visit my brother, in New York city. A trip to BH Photo would be a must. Australian prices and choices are not as good as there, and the currency rate is not bad now.
As I understand it, I'd pay 4% sales tax on purchases, because this is in NY State.
Is that correct? Is there a refund for tourists? Any other issues or bits of advice relevant to this issue?

Thanks so much.

I Googled "new york city sales tax exemption for tourist"
most of the links say the same thing as this link, another link.
In a nutshell, it sounds like you'll have to pay the 4% sales tax and it's not refundable to out of state visitors/tourist.
But I'm on the west coast; hopefully a DPCer from NY can answer your question with a definitive answer. Or perhaps send to email to B&H Photo regarding the sales tax issue...

ETA: Link to B&H page regarding local sales tax.
You might be looking at 8.875% sales tax...

If you make the purchase in the store and take it with you, you will be charged NY State and Local (NYC) sales tax which is a total of 8.875%.

If you have the item shipped outside of the State of NY - whether that is in the US or another country, you will not be charged sales tax, but you will be subject to shipping charges, whatever they may be. So for instance, if your hotel is in New Jersey, you could have it shipped there, and not pay the tax.

Adorama, which is another large camera store in NYC seems to have more free shipping deals than B&H.

I thought I saw something that B&H has to charge NJ tax when shipped there???? Not sure what the final outcome of that is (only a matter of time before some of the states get it.. CA is active in that area).

Stores or Merchants can not be compelled to collect sales tax for states where they have no incidence of business. So unless B & H has some business operation in New Jersey (that could be an office, warehouse, etc), New Jersey would have no way to compel them to collect revenue for them.
As far as I know, B&H has no business presence in NJ. There are some retailers (usually large ones) that collect and remit sales tax in all states as a matter of policy even where they wouldnt have to - most of them doing so because they feel it's politically correct for them to do so.
