maybe someone can help me out here.

I'm thinking about getting a 70-200mm lens. Do anyone know if the sigma 70-200mm is as good as the Nikon? Trying to save some money. Thanks!

DP review has some quality reviews on all the options out there (Tamron, Sigma, and Nikon 70-200), for comparing them.
Their take on them is that basically the Nikon is the best overall, the Tamron has superb optics but bad autofocus, and the Sigma optics slightly worse than Tamron but with a vastly superior AF (on par with Canon/Nikon). One thing to consider- the Nikon VRI can be had for less than the II, and the issues that plagued it were related to full frame use. Do you intend to go full frame? Lastly, one other thing to mull over... various versions of the Nikon 80-200 can be had for about the same cost as the Sigma/Tamron options, and may well be worth considering.
ETA: keep in mind the 80-200 will be AF not AF-S so there will be a decrease in focus speed. Where that places it, speed-wise, with the Tamron/Sigma versions, I'm not sure. Either way, although it's older, it is an extremely proven lens.

I can speak from experience... I have both the Sigma and Nikon 70-200.

I used the Sigma for several years, especially for shooting Steelers games, and I was never fully happy with it. It just doesn't focus quickly enough, or well enough for my tastes. The Nikon one is obviously significantly more expensive, but I am very happy that I took the plunge and went with it. It's a much better lens.

Well, the VRI is an FX lens... but suffers from vignetteing. The review said it's managed decently by the D3's vignette control, but not sure if you're aiming toward D700 or D3.

There is an AF-S version of the 80-200, I own one, it is a great lens but with no VR. You can get one for about $1000.

Whoa! I've never even seen one of those for sale, and I'll periodically troll and check out prices. You just gave me something new to eye furtively forever...

I've used the 70-200 and the 80-200 extensively, love both lenes. The 70-200 is a tad faster in focus speed but optics are fantastic either way.
