You can do that AFTER the challenge has rolled over. Your critique will be better served when you see the score and you can do the image and photographer better justice in this manner.

No, not bigotry, thats reserved for personal opinion and intolerance. Discussion of an in-vote image is against the rules, and the term for that is collusion/fraud irrespective of your good intentions.

The right thing to do is reserve your comments as to how an image did or why it bombed AFTER the challenge is over.
The results of your criticism, encouragement etc in any event cannot change the entry already submitted.

You may not:

* give an entry a lower score because you believe it violates the Challenge Rules.
* recommend an entry for disqualification for not meeting the challenge.
* vote on an entry based on its server-generated thumbnail.
* vote on your own entry.
* vote in a manner that suggests an intent to disrupt the voting system.
* offer or cast biased votes for any other user.
* offer slanderous, rude, profane or inflammatory comments.
* abuse the anonymous commenting feature in any way.
* discuss any entry in the forums while voting is in progress.
* hold more than one DPChallenge account.
* vote from another userĂ¢€™s DPChallenge account.
* attempt to alter the point totals for any entry in any way.

I thought DPC stripped that?

No ... it's just that "normally you can't" download the pictures to read the exif data.
Sorry, sometimes I'm curious ;)

LOL, got ya... :)

The EXIF data is stripped out of the image that is being voted on and, despite the transparent gif, you can however still get to the original image and use an online EXIF reader to have a look. There would be no point to anonymous voting if this had not been thought of and resolved.

If you can read EXIF data then my reader is faulty :( although I have tested it on various images (here and elsewhere on the web) and thus far it worked fine.
I have also saved an in-voting image (mine actually) to HDD and there is no original EXIF info in it, as I can compare it to the one I uploaded.

Go figure.

Keyz, I've bypassed my online EXIF reader and tested various photo editing apps that I have. Not one of them shows any EXIF data. If you have figured out a way to read EXIF info from an image currently in-voting, the right thing to do would be to let SC know about this.

I'm not motivated enough to try to get past the transparent GIF... and I use Save For Web on all my entries, so I dunno...

Some pictures have no exif data because of the editing software used.
Some others keep every original datas (like mine).
No name in my picture, you'll just find D700 + Gimp ;)

That would bias my opinion of the shot. Perfect feedback is unbiased, and unknowing of others thoughts on the matter. I often revisit shots that have made an impression on me in the past and have remarked how I might have felt it was not well received.
Doing that after without leaving an initial comment is worthless.

There is no discussion about the entry. It's a comment, which can not be replied to and discussed publically.

My understanding of that rule was in regard to this kind of discussion (Manic's response to these) where individual photos are discussed publicly on the forum.

And yes. It is bigoted. I'm certainly not saying you are. But folk who would report an innocent gesture of good will. How is that not?

Edit: I guess I understand what you're saying. But I'd prefer to give real feedback how I see it. Know what I mean?

Niall, you are of course entitled to your opinion and you have to live with your conscience.
Understand that you are leaving yourself open to being slapped on the wrist and both yours and the other image being DQ'd. That is not entirely kosher for the other member...no matter your intentions and good Samaratan-ship. Is that a word? LOL

Haha.
I might send in a ticket to ask specifically about this.
Will report back later.

Edit: Here's hoping I don't get "slapped on the wrist" for my enquirery/clarification request.

Take a look at the red ribbon in the "Under" challenge, for example:
//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1252/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_902597.jpg

IPTC
* Record Version = 2
* Keywords = U-Bahn / UNDER / Westfriedhof
* By-line = Claus Kannewurf

EXIF IFD0
* Camera Make = Canon
* Camera Model = Canon EOS 50D
* X-Resolution = 300/1 ===> 300
* Y-Resolution = 300/1 ===> 300
* X/Y-Resolution Unit = inch (2)
* Last Modified Date/Time = 2010:08:09 22:01:39
* Artist = Claus Kannewurf

Looks like EXIFs are not stripped, or at least not entirely.

About exif and anonymity of entries, why not, datas might be stripped out...
About copyright inside exif for past challenges, (almost) every DPC users want it (like the ones who vote yes for the crappy watermark and gif overlay).

So the solution is to clear exif datas for voting ... and put them back for archive ?
I think that L. is aware of that, and he got some reasons to do it like this.

About doing a ticket for this? Exif were always here in an easier way to get before the gif overlay, and nobody care about it... me neither ;)

Edit: typo

Ow, thats a whole new can of worms. Or maybe not, based on the transparent gif and watermarking threads.
I only tested a few of my own recent images. going through the current Oxymoron challenge there are a few that contain EXIF. So clearly I wasn't looking at images that still had it in. You're right, DPC isn't stripping it out on the upload. Sad. And if the photog has edited his/her in camera copyright setting...anonymity gone.
Thx for the heads up!

You have commented on 14 images (16%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.2791.

Only if you have no conscience! I see no harm in asking for help, have done so myself often enough as you know.
Just don't discuss the live in-voting image in the forums.

All will only be revealed after rollover Steve.
